Freezes after having installed XP

I have been running ME on my Compaq Presario 5000. I
switched last week to XP (sp1a). I also went from 128
RAM to 256. Within hours of reconnecting, the computer
froze. No response form CTL-ALT-Del. So reboot. The
computer freezes 4-5 times/day, most recently having
completed 98% of a scan. Why is the computer doing this.
I'd sure hate to lose a few hours work if i were in Word.
