having problems capturing video with moviemaker 2.0. DV-
AVI works fine, but choosing the other 2 options, best
quality, or other settings, the file stops after 3kb.

any thoughts?

thanks,
Rock

I found 2 versions of qasf.dll

C:\WINDOWS\system32 - version 9.0.0.2980
C:\WINDOWS\RegisteredPackages - 6.5.1.900

might this be the problem?

- Rock

It's probably not the issue... the one in your system32 folder should be the
one in use, but the one in the registered package might come out if anything
happens to the version 9 one, via an automatic update.

Maybe it needs a codec to capture.... download the full pack of version 9
codecd.... link on the Setup > Software page.

I have found that you have either chosen the incorrect
format to save in OR, when downloading DV from CAM if it
does this, change from 16:9 format to 4:3 and then once
downloaded, change it back. Has worked for me every time,
in fact as soon as I see the 3KB halt, I cancel and change
that setting.

Hi Eric,

What you describe indicates a problem in your software.

Choosing the incorrect format will simply waste the time taken to save in
that format, it will not cause your machine to freeze.

The format 16:9 or 4:3 is not referenced during the capture to your hard
drive, only when you save the result of your editing to a finished file
does that setting come into play.

While everything else is working properly for you I suppose leave well
alone, but I suspect that whatever the problem is, it will jump up and bite
you sooner or later.

John,
Thanks. I may not have been as clear as I should have.
What I have found on two different machines is that when I
download my video from my cam (two different cams as well,
an Elura 50, and recently a XL1S), video that was recorded
in 16:9 for some reason wont download unless I first
change the settings in WMM Options to 4:3. Once
downloaded and the clips appear, I change it back and the
clips all appear in perfect form, 16:9.
Naturally, I would prefer to not have to do that though :)

Hi PapaJohn,

i downloaded wmv9VCMsetup.exe, but still no luck.
capture stops after 3kb.

think it might be a hardware issue?
my specs:
1.6ghz P4
512Mb PC2100 DDR Ram
All in Wonder Radeon 7500

thanks,
Rock

Rock,

When you capture to a WMV format, MM2 creates a temporary DV-AVI file and
then copies from it to the WMV file in the background, as it has spare time.

The WMV will be created in the folder you pick, but the temporary file will
be in whatever is in your option setting.... maybe change that setting as
the temporary folder isn't available for some reason.

I saw your other note about 16:9 versus 4:3.... one thing about it is that
it's the same resolution 720x480 in either mode.... so it really doesn't
make a difference which mode your set in when capturing, unless you capture
to WMV and use the Media Player to view it.... WMP will use the setting to
determine how to show it.

Hi PapaJohn,

i tried moving the temp folder, to no avail. i then
tried Eric's solution, where you change the aspect ratio
of the capture from 16:9, to 4:3, and then switch back to
16:9 to finish the movie and it worked.

thanks for all your help!
