Whenever I try to click on the 'clear forms' button in the AutoComplete
window, IE freezes. I can launch other instances of IE and it works fine, and
no other programs seem to be effected.

I'm using IE6 on WinXP Pro and I've installed the newest updates for both.
I've got Trend Micro PCIllin running, which is also updated. I've tried to
run a tegistry cleaner and that didn't fix it either.

Any suggestions?

Jon,

Will that help fix problems with AutoComplete for Forms? (or just passwords?)

I think the more general case would be in the hidden branches under this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider

and perhaps related to the Protected Storage service

This old article is the basis of that idea

<title>Protected Storage Always Prompts for Password After Using GhostWalker</title>
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q264033

(MSN search for
"Protected Storage System Provider" autocomplete site:microsoft.com
)

Unfortunately I have not found any newer information which explains how the new
Protected Storage service would relate to this. E.g. perhaps you would have to stop it
first before attempting a similar operation to what the article describes. In particular
though I have always been concerned that no mention has ever been given about EFS.
If this service has *anything* to do with the Encrypting File System and encrypted files
are being used I think *deleting* that entire branch would be the last thing that anyone
should try doing.

Hmm... here's something newer but it still doesn't ease my concern for EFS users.

<title>The AutoComplete feature does not work after you enable it in Internet Explorer on a computer that is running Windows XP Home
Edition</title>

At least this procedure suggests exporting the branch before deleting it. <EG>

Hi there,

I'm not really a Windows expert, so I'm not sure if I'm doing something
wrong, but when I try delete the 'Protected Storage System Provider' key it
just returns an error and says its unable to delete that key. I've tried
clearing out the registry entries from the other posting, and while it does
clear the list, it still freezes when I try clearing the list within IE.
