Freeze up

My computer will freeze up with a sound like it is turning off (a click)and the screen stays up and nothing works, cannot figure it out...help, I have defragged and uninstalled various things the kids downloaded, scanned for viruses too!

same prob also sometimes on bootup my desktop etc has

all reduced in size and on checking settings they have
not changed!!!!my fonts overlap to make it difficult to
read,can any one help
