I installed W2K on top of a rather old Gateway Win98 computer and all I get
is the startup screen. The scrolling BAR reaches all of the way from left to
right and then it just sits there. It will not respond to any keyboard or
mouse commands and just freezes up.

I CAN get into safemode but it will not boot up into the OS. I installed it
twice. Can anyone help or advise me. If it matters it is an E 1400 and is
not supported by Gateway any more. Thanks in advance.

Be advised that upgrades almost always fail for any number of reasons. Save
yourself some time and trouble, given that you'll more than likely end up
with an unstable OS with all the remnants/ corruption left behind from the
upgrade. Best to blow it all away and go for the clean install.

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 CD-Rom or setup disks.
The set of four install disks can be created from your Win2k CD-rom; change
to the \bootdisk directory on the cd-rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos)
or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

During Windows 2000 setup, at some point, will want to confirm the previous
operating system for the upgrade; at that point you'll simply insert the
qualified product install CD for it to verify. Then the install will
proceed.

Check the pc, mb or hardware manufacturer's web site for the latest bios and
or Windows 2000 drivers for your devices.

Be sure to apply these to your new install before connecting to any network.

Thank you for the great advice but I failed to provide something very
important. My client is a cheap (frugal) financial guy and he wants me to
"walk on water" by moving a medical program from said computer to another BUT
he does not have the original software to reinstall it. I therefore decided
to upgrade this machine, now on its third install.

I tried to use Laplink's PC mover but it did not work out so well. Is there
"anything" I can do before I have to tell him he is going to have to buy an
upgraded program and that I killed his computer.

The computer has 15GB and 10GB available HDD with 64MB PC100 ram. I
upgraded the ram to 512MB and failed. Please dont laugh to hard. :X

Thanks and I wish you the best of all worlds.

Nothing I know of that would be reliable. You can recover your data from a
parallel install.
