Recently I downloaded freeware (CamStudio) that captures
cam screens and creates video. It is 'free' but requires
registration within 14 days.

Can someone advise what the catch may be? In general is
freeware safe? Is there anything I should be alert to?

Any guidance is appreciated.

Freeware is usually safe to use. The only thing you should do is download a spyware detector like adaware. This will keep all adware and spyware off your computer.
Freeware is good.

Spybot and Adware on a daily basis.
