I would like to resize the NTFS partition created by the Dell recovery
disk and then create a data-only partition. Which freeware tool could
reliably do it?

Again as in the other post this is linux but it is a 'live' CD with only
partitioning software on it.

http://gparted.sourceforge.net/features.php

Its about a 30 Mb .iso file

I did try an earlier version some months ago and while the interface is not
wonderful it seemed to do the job. Its worth a try anyway.
reliably do it?

Now there is a question and a half. Since this is a recovery disk hack you
have nothing to loose.
Usual advice - make sure you have good back-ups of existing data.

I'll second this recommendation for GParted Live. I've used it on three
computers without any problems. On two of those, I resized ntfs partitions
to create space for linux installations. I found the interface quite
easy to use.

I do it with a BootIt NG boot diskette.
I click the first Cancel notice (don't install it), then do Work with
Partitions.

I occasionally do too, but it's not freeware. :-/
