Hi,

I'm searching for a freeware to view (or perhaps handle) CorelDraw files.

Irfanview only can show me a preview of these files.

I'm searching for a freeware to view (or perhaps handle) CorelDraw files.

There really isn't anything to 'handle' cdr files. There are some viewers
(e.g. Irfanview) but nothing that will allow you to manipulate, work on,
etc.

CorelDraw is not freeware and is actually OT here except as you put
it...freeware viewer. You could hop over to corel.com and check out the
newsgroups there, perhaps ask in this group: corel.graphic_apps.cdgs11-draw
Someone there might have the answer if there is one other than NO.

cdr. files are propietary and have always been that way...even someone with
say Version 10 cannot even open a cdr file saved in Version 11 so trying to
do so in another app seems highly unlikely. There is a 30 day trial download
available but its a huge download just to use something for a month or to
look at one or two files.

Hi Stoney,

thanks for your answer.

etc.
It would be enough if I could view and print cdr files, but Irfanview
can only show a preview of the cdr file.

Will look at this.

Marco,

To my knowledge, the only 3rd party media manager that can handle any of the
Corel format files is the pricey Canto Cumulus. As you are probably aware,
file formats are proprietary data, and if the format owner doesn't want you
to use their formats, there is nothing much you can do about it.

It is my understanding, that Corel is reluctant to license their file
formats. If this is true, discouraging third party support is an odd
position to take for a company that is in a distant second place to Adobe in
graphics software, a distant second in Office Suites, and who survives on
handouts from Microsoft.

You would think making your products a popular base for clever independent
programmers would be a SMART marketing move. Just more proof that good
programs can always be trumped by stupid marketing decisions.

Hi Marco,

Columbus can view CDR (Corel Draw) Versions through 8.0

http://www.oasys-software.com/product/dm/columbus/features.shtml

<quote>
Columbus includes viewing technology from Stellent and Rasterex, it also
incorporates and extends Autodesk's Volo View Express to ensure that you
have the best viewing tools to hand.

All three are encapsulated into a single viewing window, which will
automatically choose the best viewer for the selected file - you just
pick the view button

Over 200 file formats are supported including Microsoft Office 97,
Office 2000, AutoCAD, Microstation and Zip archives.
</quote>

The bad news - it's a 28 MB download:

Hi Susan,

Do you need to first define a project (CDS)?
Or does it also let you simply browse folders and preview the contents?

(28 MB is a bit much for me to dl and find out.)

Hi Sietse,

I haven't a clue. I finally bit the bullet and *downloaded* Columbus
last night - *one* tick mark on the to-do list. ;)

(e-mail address removed) (Chris Dubea) is our resident expert I believe -
you might ping him if he doesn't see your post.

Susan:

Where you planning on installing the above software?

It says it can view Visio files. If you install it, I would be
interested in sending you a Visio file to see if it views okay if that
would be allright.

Thanks.

Hello Frank,

I don't have the least idea when - it's not something I *need* but I
would like to try it out - eventually . . .

Alas, I'll be down in the salt mines as of tomorrow ;)

Don't anticipate much time to play until after PL2004 is complete.

Fine by me - I'll try to remember to ping you . . .

Sorry for going by my memory, which said that you had actually used it.
I really should know by now that I can no longer rely on that. :)

Thanks for the hint.
Well, it's more curiosity than that I have a need for the program, atm.
But I am pretty sure, that I will be installing it some time (unless I
should hear good reasons not to). Looks to be a very good program.
