Will any one tell me a good freeware program that will hide the desktop
icons until the mouse hovers over one of them?

I do not even know what to call this type of application so I can not even
do a search.

Thanks

Not exactly what you asked for, but very handy:

TrayDevil

Overview :

A System Tray Minimizer with Power Functions: Left-clicking the
Titlebar of any Window while pressing a Selectable Key (Ctrl,Shift or
Alt) will minimize that Window in the System Tray. Option to minimize a
Window in the System Tray by simultaneous Left+Right-click the Titlebar
(one-hand minimisation). Middle(Wheel)-clicking the Titlebar of any
Window while pressing the Selected Key will set that Window Always On
Top; One Middle(Wheel)-click resets to Not On Top. Disable the close
button in each window titlebar by Key+MiddleClicking the close button.
Re-Enable the close button by MiddleClicking the disabled close button.
Options to hide System Tray Clock and the TrayDevil icon. Left, Right
or Middle(wheel)-Clicking the TrayDevil icon will Restart, Shutdown or
Lock your system. Clicktriggers to Restart, Shutdown and Lock can be
changed. Options can be changed from the Right-click TrayDevil icon
menu or by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Space. Restart and Shutdown occur after
an adjustable countdown (press Selected Key to temporarily bypass
countdown). Easily restart or shutdown a PC through a windows remote
desktop connection. Commandline parameters available: -l (Lock), -o
(logOff), -r (Restart) or -s (Shutdown). Dutch, German, Swedish,
Romanian, Chinese and Italian translation included. You can translate
the program yourself by editing and renaming YourLanguage.ini (English)
or any other language .ini file in the Program Folder.

Ehm... SORRY! I didn't want to suggest Traydevil, but this one:

SnadBoy's TopDesk

Overview :

SnadBoy's TopDesk places a Icon in the SysTray with which one a menu
calls, which contains the Icons of the Desktop. A fast alternative too
' all windows minimize.

Have a look at Iconoid, which is virtually what you are asking for

http://www.sillysot.com/

I toggle my icons by hot key with The Wonderful Icon:

Or you could have a clear desktop and put, eg, Deskontop in your
quicklaunch when you wanted to see desktop icons
