Does anyone know if there is a freeware program to extract text from
listboxes, message boxes and other non clipboard friendly controls similar
to how it is done by commercial products SnagIt and Kleptomania. I have
tried CountCharacters and CopyText but they don't work for all controls.

Paul,

I don't know what platform you are using, but PC Mag had a small utility
(122.6 KB) called "Scraper" and here is what it does according to this extract
from the Readme File:

PLATFORMS:
Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0

DESCRIPTION:
Scraper is a simple utility which can 'scrape' text from other application
windows. This lets you copy and save crucial message box text such as program
or
system error information. An "append" feature lets you add to the existing
scraped text. In some cases, Scraper cannot copy message box information as
text
because of the manner in which it is displayed. To get around this problem,
Scraper has an option to copy windows as images.

The direct download link is:

I came across this sometime ago and decided to keep the url just in case.

I hope this helps you out.

I am using an app called TextGrabber by Eric VanHeest. I don't have the
link, but his email in the about box is edv * netcom dot com (replace *
with the at sign)

I haven't experimented with listboxes, but you can copy the text from a
standard
Windows message box just with the standard Windows Copy keystroke
combination Ctrl C . For instance, the below text is verbatim out of an
error
box I just now forced to occur:

I've just tried that in case I was missing something (I must be).

The problem is that I can't select the text in the first place.

(cringes, about to made to look incredibly stupid, but MUST know)

You don't have to select the text. It's enough that the message box is
active.

That didn't work for me - I just get a boing from windoze (98SE) and
nothing happens; if I then paste I get what was on the clipboard
previously.

I can't get edit>copy either, while the window has focus

Then maybe it works only on Windows XP, sorry.

S'orlright. While you were away I tried Showin, only 9k download, and
downright scary - it read sticky notes that were covered by other apps, and
all sorts of other stuff I didn't know was there

I don't know Kleptomania, but SnagIt allow you to extract text from
applications and information retrieval systems which have somehow
disabled all clipboard controls. You have to do some tidying up
afterwards though.
I have never come across a freeware programe which can do this.
