Freeware sites?

The debate about NoNags seems to have hit a nerve and provoked a
debate about the flodo of new "freeware" sites. I fell for
www.duozhang.com and found myself with a trojan.

I have also been having a dialogue recently with Irfan (Skiljan)
because his site includes "http://www.freeware-search.com/" in
his list of favourite links. He has not, I fear, had time to
actiuaslly look at the site, which doesn't have a single link to
anything of any use or value... It is virtually a mock up of a
site just for show... and to sell. :-(

How does one tackle these two examples of abuse of the
"freeware" name?

Don't bother trying. All it will get you is grief.

I'm sure (from previous posts) you mean www.zhangduo.com (HunterSoft).

As you already know, HunterSoft is already being tackled (FWIW).

www.freeware-search.com is a complete misnomer, indeed.

Apparently Irfan considers it a good software (not freeware) link,
despite its name.
That is his good right, and personally I really would have no
inclination at all to bother Irfan with my personal view on that.
(Btw. although IrfanView is freeware for personal use, it is payware
otherwise and I imagine he may well make very good money with it.)

Misuse of the term freeware for what often just means free download, or
worse, is of course something we are all well familiair with.
John C. is right, though: do not make a big effort of trying to fight
that, as that is hopeless.

My view is also that persuing something positive often is better than
fighting the negative.
Too often I have seen that the latter can create horrible characters.

That's how urban myths start... sorry if there is a real
duozhang! ;-)

But there is no software on the site either... ;-)

WHat kind of characters? Surely they won'd shoot bullets through
the writer's office window? :)

Reminds me of Duoduo, Chinese poet in exile.
I always found that a funny name, with that duo of duo's. :)

Ouch! That's gross!

Heh, a reference to Dutch current affairs! ;)

De kogels? *g*

Now you got me really surprised and curious.
I found out your web site and that you're a Brit living in Amsterdam.
That's an impressive list of major Dutch feature films and documentaries
that you translated!

Completely OT, but may I ask?
I saw Ali & Nino listed. That was a blast from the past!
I read the book 30 (I guess) years ago and I'm very pleased and
surprised to see there is a Dutch feature film after it.
Do you happen to know if it will be in the theaters soon?

"Sietse Fliege"
But what do I replace "REPLACE.invalid.WITH.nl" with?
Completely OT, but may I ask?

We'll see ;-)

It's a new script by Pieter Verhoeff and should be filmed this
year or next. Very relevant these days :-(

You don't. Or you do, with whatever.
That part must be something but may be anything.
It's a new script by Pieter Verhoeff

I read that at some stage he worked together on it with Rustam
Ibragimbekov (the Academy Award winning Burnt by the sun).
and should be filmed this year or next.

I hope it works out well. Fantastic project.
Very relevant these days :-(

Absolutely!
