None of the ideas expressed above are actually mine.

They are told to me by the eight inch tall space beings
who live in my PC. In return for these ideas,
I have given them permission to suck my brains out.
Oops, I forgot to tell them I have none! ;)

Not even close. :)

The best is www.snapfiles.com

In the top 6 are www.majorgeeks.com ,
http://www.freeware-guide.com/html/updates.html ,
http://www.freeware-guide.com/html/updates.html

I like the above sites because they put up brand new stuff daily, and lots
of betas.

If you don't have time to sort through jillions of programs and take a
chance on getting junk, go here: http://webpages.charter.net/bobad/best.htm
It's not the best Freeware site, but it's certainly on my top 100 list. :)

NONAGS has a lot of good freeware but also has a lot of bad freeware as
many other large directories do. On my website I try to keep it to a
minimum and put the not-so-good programs where they belong.
Unfotunately, I do have a wide variety of programs because of this.
Most of the best and most loved tools are on there I believe though.
Unless someone can find an excellent program they would like to submit a
review for. ;)

BTW, maybe someone should consider creating a tool to search the top 4
largest and best freeware directories (like the ones that search the top
4 search engines). I can make one out of JavaScript easily later. I'll
post here if I do.

I wrote a program called "Freeware Finder" a couple years ago but withdrew
it as I was no longer happy with it. (going to start working on a new one a
little later this year...... just as soon as I have time)

I agree with this. SnapFiles rocks! Easy to search, easy to browse
and lots of warez.

???? As far as I know, they don't deal in pirated software.

Firegraphic rather than IrfanView? Is it really better?

In my opinion? Yes. At least it is for what I use it for.

But then I only use picture viewers as picture viewers. Firegraphic doesn't
play music or movies, but then, I see that as a *good thing.

I don't even know what Irfanview is. Is it a movie player that also views
pictures, or, or, or... :)

I've made a version 1.0.A of my Freeware Search script if someone wants
to work with it and create their own from this. It is written in
JavaScript so it should work very well on all OSs. The script is
currently very simple. I will eventually create an option for a framed
search results page rather than opening seperate windows for each result.

http://www.freesoftwarereviews.com/freewaresearch10A.html

Regarding new version naming:
Please, if you make your own version of the script name it version
x.x.something where 'something' is an identifying string that you will
use to signify it as your own version. This is to eliminate confusion
between versions. You may want to /add/ your own suffix onto the
version rather than replaceing the current suffix so that one can see
the tree of versions. Example: 3.5.Steve.Jeff.Burt
