Can anyone suggest a good freeware program to block sites with
potentially offensive content.

Try:
http://www.we-blocker.com/

It works for me, and they update the database all the time.

It's what I use too. Technically it's nagware -- periodically when you're
surfing it opens a new browser window asking you to send them a
donation to support their development. But it's fully functional without
payment. I've sent them a donation 'cause I think they deserve it...

My experience was not positive and I found we-blocker to be nothing but trouble.
The biggest problem was a serious performance degradation. Often it couldn't
contact the we-blocker site and just seemed to lockup the machine. Kids were
constantly complaining. Tried various releases and it never got better.

Haven't tested the latest release and maybe I'll try it again.

I *think* this was the one I tried long ago .... that
interrupted browsing every 50 screens by plopping up an ad
screen asking for a donation. Back then, I just blocked the nag
screen with Proxomitron.
