Freeware MD5 program for Windows?

I am looking for a good free program for Windows that will allow me to
easily check the MD5 sum of a program or file. I have a command line
program MD5DEEP but I have to go into DOS and usually type a long path to
the file to be checked.

Is there a good MD5 program for Windows with a nice GUI??
I would like to pick the file to be checked along with the MD5 SUM file
using a mouse via an Explorer like interface and let the program tell me
whether they match.

hkSFV has a shell extension for explorer:

Note: Often has stability problems under 2k/xp, possibly due to memory
leakage.

'MD5 Checksum' is described as 'Freeware' by the author, but it is
distributed with the full source, so it's also a little bit 'Open
Source' :-)

I will be evaluating them to see which one meets my needs. I also found
Graphical MD5 for Windows which I will be checking. The URL is

The MD5 checker that I like the most is Graphical MD5Sum mentioned above.
You just drag the .md5 file to the program. Then the program determines the
MD5 checksum of the associated file (i.e. the one with the same name but
without the MD5 extension). Once it is finished calculating the MD5
checksum, the program shows both the calculated MD5 Sum on the associated
file and the one in the .MD5 file. If they match a nice green icon is
displayed against it. If they do not match -- you guessed it a red icon is
displayed!

The program is standalone and small. No installation is needed!

The only thing I do not like is you must use drag and drop. There is no
open file command that I can see.

By the way I tried hkSFV. It is also a great program! It has both drag and
drop support and the ability to load a file using an Open file command. But
I did find one thing annoying. It would only accept files with certain
extensions (e.g. .MD5 and .SFV). It would not accept a file with a .MD5.ASC
extension which is quite common. (GraphicalMD5Sum had no problems with a
..MD5.ASC file).

The only way I could get hkSFV to work with a .MD5.ASC file is to rename the
file to a .MD5 file. But when it scanned the file it did not ignore any of
the PGP related lines. (GraphicalMD5Sum on the other hand would ignore the
PGP related lines in the file and only do a MD5 check on the MD5 related
files!)

I am still leaning toward GraphicalMD5Sum. It works well.. It is very
small. It is standalone. (i.e. Requires No installation!) And it handles
not only .MD5 but also .MD5.ASC files.
