What's the freeware that's closest to EndItAll?
Don't say "EndItAll". It's a PC Mag utility, available by subscription, and
it's not freeware.
What OS? BTW, some people have mentioned problems with EndItAll (v1)
on XP, others not.
I haven't tried TrayKiller, KillWin, WinSolo or CloseAll but one might
work for you. Or create your own script that obtains a list of
processes each time it is run and then closes ones you pre-approve,
skips ones you preselect, and asks you about the rest. BatchRun or
similar might help you automate the process (see Pricelessware).
PrcView has a command line version, PV.EXE, if you prefer.
TrayKiller
This sounds like what you want. The site I mentioned last fall and my
other link are dead but some archive sites have it (e.g., SOS and
Freeware World Team).
KillWin
(The close all option might be what you want.)

Site excerpts:
--------------
TrayKiller is an application for MS Windows
(including windows XP) that let's you configure groups of programs to
start and stop by toggling an icon in the system tray. It's useful for
quickly killing background processes before you do cpu intensive
operations like burning cds or capturing video, and then restarting
them when you are done.

WinSolo (freeware version)
Sometimes you want to run a Windows program all by itself without it
being interrupted by some background application. Particularly if you
are into burning CD's or playing DVD Movies using software dvd
players. WinSolo solves this very problem by killing off all currently
running Windows applications including those that you cannot even see
with Ctrl-Alt-Del. The desktop then disappears and your chosen
application is then run in a clean Windows environment all by itself.'
Download WinSolo (Win 95/98)
CLOSEALL ver. 1.7
From the Windows taskbar you can minimize but you can't close all the
applications. This little utility (33 KB) just do it, asking if you
want to save the data, if necessary. CloseAll places itself in the
System Tray. In the readme.txt file all the new features.
