freeware for still photos -> movies?

My nifty Canon Powershot A80 has a feature which will take photos at a
specified interval. I'd like to turn a stream of these photos into a
movie that can be edited. Is there any freeware that will let me do this
painlessly?

Either a program that just takes a bunch of numbered photos and makes an
avi or a comprehensive program designed around this task (complete with
timelines, transitions, etc.) will do nicely.

Google for SSMM (Slide Show Movie Maker). I think it will fit the bill
for you.
