I know Acrobat Reader is free - but it takes a long time to load on my
system and open a file.

Are there any freeware compact/efficient PDF reader programs out there ?

Something that would open quicker - even if only for simple PDFs.

Thanks !

Which version do you have? For version number -
see ABOUT in Acrobat Readers Help menu.

If you have ver 6, it is know to be slow and resource hungry,
so the older system you have the slower it feels.
About that see <http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=9896>

So you might want to try an older version, found here:
<http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/alternate.html>

If your current version is 6, then try ver.5.05, if it is ver.5x you
have - try ver.4.05. (Or, try them all :) The versions listed with
Search and/or Accessibility options (see web page) is probably slower
loading than same version number without these features.

All the best,

ADOBE READER SPEED-UP V1.12
===========================
Author : Joseph Cox
Website : http://www.tnk-bootblock.co.uk
Forum : http://www.tnk-bootblock.co.uk/forum
Released: 1st January, 2004.

SUPPORTS
--------
This software supports the speed-up of the following:
(Note: Both free and full versions are supported)

Adobe Acrobat 3.0 (experimental)
Adobe Acrobat 4.0
Adobe Acrobat 4.0.5
Adobe Acrobat 5.0
Adobe Acrobat 5.1
Adobe Acrobat 5.5
Adobe Reader 6.0
Adobe Reader 6.0.1

PURPOSE
-------
Adobe Reader Speed-Up (ARSU) was created in an effort to automate
the process of speeding up Adobe Reader's launch time by
disabling the majority of plugins that are, quite franky,
completely useless for most users.

If the program gives you an error when you try to run it,
then you require the VB Runtimes pack. Download it here:
http://www.tnk-bootblock.co.uk/prods/vbruntimes/index.php

When the program is up and running, select your Adobe
Reader directory if you are prompted to via the Change Settings
link on the first step, then click Next and select the
type of speed up you require ("SpeedUp - Fast" is recommended),
and finally click on the Start button.

If you should require to revert back to the original slow
loading state, then run the program again and select Restore
Original Configuration and click on Start.

For information on what the plugins do, click on the Plugin
Help button in the step with the list of plugins. Then click
on a plugin to display its respective information.

That's all there is to it.

SETTINGS PROFILES
-----------------
ARSU saves its settings using the current path of the program
executable. This means that you can have an ARSU executable in
C:\, and another one in C:\MyDir, and both of them would maintain
completely unrelated settings. This is useful if you have more
than one Adobe Reader/Acrobat installation and would like to quickly
and easily modify them without having to continually re-select
the install path using the Settings window.

SILENT DEPLOYMENT
-----------------
ARSU can be deployed silently. To enable this mode, load the
Deployment.ini into a text editor and set the Enable flag to
1. This should be enough for most configurations. For more
options, see the inline comments within the Deployment.ini
file.

Try to stop loading some plugins. Move *.api files from 'Adobe\Acrobat
6.0\Reader\plug_ins\'.

I'm using only 'search' and 'printme'.
menu 'help/about Adobe Plug-ins' contains descriptions of plugins.

Thanks for everyone's help !! I'm using version 5.x

I'll try the suggestions.

Have a great day !
