Does anyone know of any freeware that will allow you to select
non-sequential words or table cells in MS Word?

What I want to do is similar to what you can do in Excel when you hold down
the [Ctrl] key and select one cell in one column and row, then click on a
cell in another column and row and select it at the same time.

I do a lot of work in Word, and there are times that I need to do things
like select the first word in each paragraph of a document and make them all
bold and red. There are ways to do it, but it would be so much faster if I
could just select them all at the same time and apply the style to them in
one easy step.

I would also appreciate any pointers to good Word or Office-related groups
to cross post this to.

Thanks,

Big Johnny

This IS already possible in Word.

How? I've tried every combination that I could find.

Pretend that you have one paragraph with 50 words in it and you want to select
the first word, a word in the middle and the last word, but none of the other
47 words in the paragraph. How would you select all three words at one time
to make them all bold by hitting the bold button just once? That is the
sort of thing I want to be able to do.

Thanks for your input. This will be hugely helpful.

Which version? It's certainly not possible in anything up to and including
Word 2000, and AFAIR not in XP either. Haven't had a chance to install 2003
yet.

AFAIK there is no way to select a non-contiguous range in Word. But if
you have a standard set of tasks like this, that you perform regularly,
it's possible to do them with stored macros. The VBA in Word 97+ is very
powerful.

You can do that since Word XP (2002). Select the fist word, press (and hold)
CTRL and then select the next word...

Thanks, but, unfortunately, I am stuck with Word 97 at work (where I REALLY
need this feature) and Word 2000 at home (where I'm too poor to upgrade).

So, I'm back to my original question about freeware programs/add-ins for
earlier versions of Word that will do this.

Thanks,
Big Johnny

You can use the Format painter to make the task a little easier:

To use the Format Painter with non-contiguous text:

· Select the text that contains the formatting you wish to copy.

· Double-click on the .Format Painter. button.

· Click and drag with the mouse over the text you wish to
reformat. When you release the mouse button, the copied format is
applied to all selected text. Continue to select text and the copied
formatting will be applied until you deselect the .Format Painter.
button.

There are ways to select and copy non contiguous text but its for the
purpose of pasting them together in another document. It dosent seem
like it would suit your needs. The Format Painter will atleast make life
slightly easier.
