Where can I find a good stable freeware file compression program..
I used Yoshi's LHA version 2.55 for years until more or less compelled
to meet the ZIP archive "standard" used by colleagues.
LHA is a great little program and can also create self-extracting
archives as well as the usual selectable options with respect to
pathnames, recursion, etc.
However, it's command line program that needs to be run from a DOS box
under Windows, and I don't know if it will work under WinXP.
A google for:
lha 2.55 yoshizaki
gives a number of hits. Here's one:

You can get a copy from that site, or from the usual Simtel archives
where you'll find it listed with other freeware and other archivers

i might try 7-zip since i think i saw a usenet comment that rar format
allows archive 'edits' without need to rebuild complete archive file
(slow, if large)

I haven't seen anything else but RAR that can create .RAR files. I
would welcome any information to the contrary.
But .7Z files are very small, and even .ZIP files made by 7-Zip are
smaller. It's good stuff.

I dont understand how to use it..I mean all the adjustments like
dictionay and word size....etc

Then don't do it.
You don't need to.
Use the explorer shell extention and just select 'ultra' of 'maximum'
