Hi

Does anyone know of any free software that I can use for incoming and
outgoing faxes plus voicemail. These would all be run via a modem on the one
phone line.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards
Dave

I've tried free call center (http://www.fvsfax.com) and it installed an
old
dll without my knowledge. Had to delete the program. use it at your
peril!!!
there is a shareware program mf32.exe from http://www.mightyfax.com.
Haven't
tried it. There doesn't seem to be any other free fax programs
available.
good luck, He

Yeah, free call center reboots my computer every time it tries to access my
modem.

You got off lucky. Alot of those so-called PW fax programs will eat your
Windows...depending on what version you're running. And would require
totally reaming out your Windows files and reinstalling Windows.

And all I wanted it for was for voice mail...oh well.

A small, easy to use, non destructive fax pgm i.e. one that doesn't make
horrible changes to your HD like adding out of date dll's, doesn't conflict with
existing programs, etc...... (you get the picture) - should be added to the
pricelessware wish list. He

You might take a quick browse through http://www.sourceforge.net .

One of the biggest problems I've seen with these PW programs is that some
are royal pieces of crap and are only there because there wasn't RPOC's of a
lesser degree to have something for category X.

Oh yeah I've looked there before. Now the closest thing they have is this
http://qtphone.sourceforge.net/ but they don't have binaries for windows.

I might install Linux or FreeBSD again one of these days and try one of the
other ones (like http://vocpsystem.com/ ). However, fat change I'll get
those OSs to see the modem...

Do you have access to VB? Have you looked on
http://www.planet-source-code.com ? They also have PERL, ASP, PHP, etc. if
you have methods of working with those formats. Also a breeze through
http://www.hotscripts.com might not be too painful.

Do you mean to compile that ap I mentioned? I do have a copy of VB laying
around, but I've never used it. The only experience I have with compiling
anything was in FreeBSD and that was just typing two words and it did the
rest.

You think voice mail could be run from Perl, PHP, or ASP? 2 of those are
running on my box, and I could easily have ASP running too.

Ceg,
If by "PW" you mean Pricelessware, there is no *Pricelessware* fax
program listed. A couple of programs are mentioned on this page however:

http://pricelessware.org/2004/programs/P_CategoryIndex.php

but that page only lists programs that have been mentioned here in ACF
and makes no claims as to their worthiness. The link Susan provided
was further down on that page.

To Dave,
There are several categories of software for which there is no good
freeware offering. A good FAX-message program is one of them.

Ceg,
I totally disagree. Obviously you're confusing the list of programs
*that have been mentioned in this group* with the list of programs
that are considered to be Pricelessware.
One problem that we're starting to run into is that freeware that
works very well in one version of Windows, may be a total bomb in
another version. Who's fault is that???

Besides, if you can do better than this group in coming up with a
list of freeware recommendations, I'm sure most of us would like to
see what you have to offer.

Yeah, I believe I did say somewhere along the line something like "depending
on which version of Windows"...or something close enough to that.
So-so-ware working in one or two versions of Windows and trashing the
others, maybe. I wouldn't consider it PW. But, that's just my opinion.

Actually, I'd tend to agree with you. I think that functionality in
all OS versions should be a factor in deciding whether or not a
program is Pricelessware. If not, then at least OS versions in which
the program works should always be listed. But then, I'm not the one
compiling the list.

When you installed the Free Call Center, did you go through the process of
letting the program detect your modem? I'm running it on WXPH and the
answering machine part seems to be working well using a Lucent modem. I
haven't tried the fax part though.
