Viking Mail

Hi all,

I want to release a small program as freeware. Does anyone have any
suggestions as to what should go in the EULA, or maybe have a link to some
boilerplate text that would work?

It's a really trivial program, but I'd still like to assert my copyright and
disclaim as much liability as possible in the event that it wreaks
unintended havoc on my users :-)

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

TIA

Rob

Hi Steven,

thanks for that. I've borrowed bits from there and some other handy sources.
Much appreciated.

Hi Rob,
Your post has brought back to my mind the EULA I saw installing MozBackup.
It has only this line: "This program is freeware".
:-)

Suggest you include something to the effect that it contains no advertising,
spyware or viruses/worms/trojans (assuming, that is, that it doesn't)<g>

Damn, I KNEW I'd missed something out! That idea was in my mind while I was
cobbling the thing together, and then I totally forgot to include it. Thanks
Frank!

And no, it doesn't include ads, spyware etc, though I'll probably run Google
AdSense on it's web site. That's never gonna make me rich, but it will
probably cover the hosting fee.

LOL! Well, I guess it says it all in a nutshell, but I think I'd prefer
something like "don't even THINK about sueing me if this software somehow
screws your machine up" - might not be enforcable in all jurisdictions, but
every little helps! :-)

Try the Creative Commons site for several license examples with various
provisions ranging from public domain (not quite what you described) to
personal use only with no modification allowed by anyone except the author.
They have a fill-in-the-blank and check-the-box approach that is quite nice.

Search in alt.comp.shareware.authors archive.

Finally, thanks for adding to the freeware ouvre.
