I am changing hard drives and need to image the old one to the new one. Are
there any reliable freeware Drive Imagers around, and/or any other tools
that would facilitate this hard drive switch? I have XP Home OEM with, I
believe, two partitions.

Thanks, Ja

Hi Jackals,

You can DL the latest imager of your hard drive manufacturer
from their website...

Maxtor's Maxblast v1.27s or earlier doesn't care about the maufacturer
and can be used for any pair of drives......just a sec..

http://www1.vobis.de/bbs/firmen/maxtor/main/maxblast.exe
This looks like 1.24 but should do nicely for you...

Cheers,

SOS

SOS,

What about MaxBlast 3 at
http://www.maxtor.com/en/support/downloads/maxblast3.htm?
Does it need a Maxtor drive before it will work?

Yes it does, and all the goodness of the old versions has been thoughtfully
removed......

Here's a link to the best version: Maxblast Plus v1.26 or 1.27s :) Took
some searching but this is the real deal...

Sorry, was pressed for time earlier, had a client with a surfeit
of spyware needing deletion.

I think I had trouble using those old versions with WindowsXP as was
requested (even with FAT32).
v.3 works fine but has that need for a Maxtor drive (somewhere on the
system).

Casper XP. There is a free version that does everything the
"Pro" version does except change the partition sizes. All
you have to do is install the new hard drive in the system
as the second, third or fourth unit, boot the system and
tell it which drive to copy where. I just replaced my 120GB
with a 160GB. The 120GB had about 80GB on it. Casper
copied it and the new drive was ready to use in less than
1hr 15 min on my machine. I shut down the machine, removed
the old drive and moved the new drive into the primary
slot. Best of all, there was nothing that had to be
touched or tweaked with WinXP - the machine was ready to
use. If you then want to change the partition(s), you can
use one of the partition managers. If you d/l the pro
version of Casper XP as I decided to do rather than make it
a 2 step operation requiring much more time, it will also
handle the partition mods when it dupes the drive. This is
by far the most hassle-free way I have ever found to upgrade
a hard drive and, it is also the quickest.

Thanks. That is a new for me. The limitation in the trial version is not
a big deal. You can always resize the partition using the free Partition
Resizer at http://www.zeleps.com/

Is that a functiional requirement for the program to work? Or just a
license requirement?

I just noticed that Partition Resizer will not resize NTFS partitions. Too
bad..

I appreciate the help, esp. the feel for this thing I got from your dialogue
(It would be ideal if all answers could include such astute dialogues rather
than, as usually happens, a mere one-liner--esp. for us (relative) novices).

I am a first-timer with switching HDDs--what are the pros/cons of either 1)
imaging the old to the new as is, and leaving the unworked excess as it is
for now, OR 2) modifying the partitons to fit the new HD (I already have an
excess of approx. 70% space and am changing HDs because of a product recall,
not because of size--although the result upgrades from 40G to 80G. ) I ask
this because I have yet to tackle the subject of Partitioning. I am looking
at this new HD as a "blank slate".

You are tremendously helpful. Thanks

Rob

It gives the impression it's a functional requirement but I always had a
Maxtor drive so I don't really know.

Maxblast Plus v1.26 or 1.27s does not seem to fit on a regular 1.44
floppy. I tried three different ones. Then I tried something you might
be interested in, freeware called 166Floppy. It gives you just a little
more room on a standard floppy disk. It appears to be abandoned
freeware and not much instructions, but it works.

The site is great........if you want to install the dotcomtoolbar spyware
utility.

Gee, I feel realy dumb, I was trying to download the maxblast.exe file
straight to a floppy, instead of saving it on the hard drive and then
clicking on it to allow the floppy to be made.
Anyway the 166Floppy program still is neat.
Thanks
