Hi,

I recently bought a CD-RW. After downloading the pricelessware file
generously provided by Steve Burn from the above URL , all I create is
a copy of the pw2004.iso file on CD-R media. No access to the
individual programs in that file. I've tried the help file of the
software program that came with the drive in attempting to write the
.iso file to disc, and so far I have a good start on a collection of
'coaster's'. Any help or advice in expanding the pricelessware file,
is appreciated. Thanks!

What burning software are you using? Here is a description of how to use
Nero: http://www.weethet.nl/english/cdrw_usingnero_iso.php

This is a very common mistake.
You created a data CD, and copied the iso file to the CD.
That is not the right way to do it.

Check the menues in your burner program and find something like:
"Burn a CD from an image file."
Or "Burn Image".

If there is a wizard starting when you start your burner program you can
cancel it and instead look through the menues by yourself.

When you find the right menu choice you will be asked to find the image
file. You may have to change the file type to .iso in the file open
dialog box to find it and load it. In Nero you should also mark the
"finalize CD and close it", (or something like that) alternative before
you start the burning.

Do not throw away that CD, it is still useful even if it doesn't work as
it should. You now have the iso file saved on a CD, which means you do
not have to keep it on your hard disk, in case you want to burn more
copies.

You could also use it as it is, but then you need an iso viewer
installed and associated with iso files, just like you may have a zip
utility associated with zip files.

If you have that you can click on an iso file, on the CD for example,
look inside it, and unpack the files you want, just like you would look
inside a zip file and unpack the files you want.

If it actually *is* a CD-RW, as opposed to just a CD-R, he should be
able to re-use it.

It sounds like the burner is a CD-RW, but the media he used was a CD-R.

You need special disks to burn CD-RW CD:s.
They are more expensive and have a slightly different color.

Yer right. I didn't catch what you quoted about the "CD-R media."

I have 5 copies of pw2004.iso. so, no problem there. :)

The Optorite optical drive, I bought from a small computer shop and
it had Nero software. After getting different errors using the
program (probably incorrectly), I went back to the shop and the owner
installed Easy CD Creator, instead. I don't have a 'hard copy' for
either program though. If someone (me) is unable to create a
CD with these programs, something must be wrong the the user!
I appreciate your clarification and advice earlier.

As Steve Burn suggested, I downloaded DeepBurner and will try that
program, soon.

That may be a definite possibility.
I apologize, that my original post was OT here and should have been
posted to a.c.f.d., instead.

Also, thank you, Susan Burger, for creating the pricelessware 2004 CD!

I had problems downloading it as well. I finally got it by using a
download manager. Has anyone considered a bit-torrent approach?

You need to use a downloader program which can be set to not give up
after a number of retries.

In Download Express there is a setting that is set to limit the retries
to a certain number. Unmark that choice for unlimited re-trying.

That is what you need if you have a connection which has disturbancies
and you need to download big files.
Set it to use 2-3 threads to, to get maximum speed out of the
connection.

If you have Total Commander (nagware/payware) you can get a freeware
addon which makes ISO files work as zip files.
Click on it and it opens up, select what files to unpack/copy to another
place in your computer.

There are freeware addons and plugins for a lot of file formats for TC.
Like; deb, rpm, bz2, z, img, iso, icl, cpio, msi, dbf, dbx, avi, html,
gz, tar, gz, bin, eml, db, etc..
There are many more available, plus the built-in formats in TC like zip,
arj, lzh, lha, rar, etc..

Here is one page with such freeware addons:
http://www.totalcmd.net/directory/packer.html

http://www.totalcmd.net/ is a whole site full of freeware additions and
plugins for TC. Many of them are open source too.
