Which is best - AntiVir Personal Edition, AVG, or Avast?

I was an avid AVG user, but moved to Firebird/Thunderbird which AVG does
not handle. Now I use Avast which worked a treat during the recent MS-
type viruses.

I also just moved from AVG to AVAST!. Primarily because of the email
checking. Works very well. I must state though, that I never had a problem
with AVG, other than the email checking was very sub-standard for OE6

In my opinion they are all pretty much the same ...avast being the most
bloated id say though , and AVG being the fastest scanner.AVGs email
scanner isnt that good (version 7 is much better though not free yet)...
but then again is an email scanner really much use?.Your av will
(heuristically or if its in virus database)detect and stop virus
executing when opening email anyway , so personally i dont see any
advantage in email scanners other than it sounds good.

Yeah, my problem was that I'm using POPFile, evertime I got one of those
stupid recent virus laden messages, AVG alerted me to the fact that the
POPFile history folder was infected. Then I had to go and clean it out, or
else the next time OE retrieved messages, I had to click on the stupid OK
button for every message in the folder. I was getting in the order of 100
per day, this was a royal pain. With Avast, the email is cleaned before
POPFile gets it and therefore I can simply click to delete the attachment as
it comes in.

I will toss my .02 in...

www.free-av.com Anti-Vir

I have been very very happy with it.

Did you hear the one about the dyslexic, agnostic, insomniac?
He would stay up late every night and wonder if there was a dog.
Remove yourhat to reply ... but it may take a while.
Best to go to www.mistergeek.com and reply from there.

Thanks to all who responded. It was interesting that of those who
expressed a preference, 5 favored Avast, 1 preferred AntiVir, and 0
voted for AVG.

Thats a good reason to switch :)AVG 6mail scanner scans the inbox .dbx
file or after the virus has landed so to speak , so no good in your
circumstances, but avg7 uses same sort of scan as avast, but not free as
of yet

A question I have is "Which one requires the fewest system resources
to run in the background?" Not that this would be the deciding factor
for me of course. And currently I'm using AVG 6. Works for me.

Well as someone who has tried all 3 i do prefer avg 6, simply because ive
had some crash issues with avast in the past , and also system freezing
where i have to physically power off my machine. It mau have been
incompatability issues so im not blaming avast.Antivir i found a bit slow
, and didnt like the shell extension scanner or lack of it compared with
avg.If i remember correctly antivir doesnt have an email scanner either
does it?....AVGs is a waste of space too in my opinion , but if like h-
man you use applications that need an email scanner then avast would be
the choice to make i think.

P.S anyone using latest version of avast with w98/se and having no
problems?

I've read lots of false positives when using AVG. Perhaps, that's just
because so many people use AVG, or maybe AVG is just too twitchy.

Any Freeware Anti Virus software that works on Windows 2000 Server ?

The newer version (not sure which it is...I am at work now) is much faster
than the older versions. The old version seemed to take forever to scan.

YOu are correct that it does not scan e-mail, but since I only receive
text e-mail and scan any attachment I get anyway, this si s a moot point
for me.

Anti-Vir will not allow you to save any attachment that has a virus in it.
I also like the internet update feature. The fact that new defintion
files come out 2-3 times a week is very reassuring.

I guess in the end it comes down to choice. I have never had any problems
with it, either with Win 98SE, Win Me, or Win 2000. It has been a very
good piece of software.

I am very sorry about that. I was sure it did. I stand corrected.
