Freeware alternative to PGPDisk

Hi all,

Are there any programs that can replace the functionality of PGPDisk?

The main thing is that they must be very stable, fast and run on Win XP
without corrupting data. PGPDisk is perfect but costs $$$!

I have come across Cryptainer LE :
http://www.cypherix.co.uk/cryptainerle/faqs.htm
but the volumes are limited to just 20MB.

Thanks for any suggestions,

Jane

There is this: http://www.ce-infosys.com.sg/CeiNews_FREECompuSec.asp which
can even encrypt your boot partition. However, I have not used it before.

There used to be Imad's flavour of PGP (and PGPDisk). But the website is
gone. Does anybody know what happened to the website or the program?

By far the best I know of is called TrueCrypt

- freeware
- opensource (which is for me absolutely required for a cryptography
program : how can one trust un program such as Cryptainer whose
vulnerabilities cannot be tested independently)

There is an "official" 1.0a version which supports Win 2000/XP

An older 1.0 version also supported Win98 but it had to be retired
because of possible copyright problems. This version is still available
on several unofficial sites (http://www.freewebs.com/thinker2004/ for
example). This is the one I use, and i am really happy with it

Among its features :

- It can encrypt full partitions/devices or create virtual encrypted
disks within files (on removable media also).
- TrueCrypt offers plausible deniability (TrueCrypt volumes cannot be
identified as such)
- maximum TrueCrypt volume size is 18,446,744,073 GB (maximum 2 GB under
win98)
- the only free open-source on-the-fly encryption software that fully
supports Windows XP
- good and easy visual interface

Much more detailed information is available (in french) at
http://www.chez.com/winterminator/DiskPG/otfe.html

One caveat : not compatible with Ahead Nero InCD

The program was taken down at the request of PGP Corporation (or Phil
Zimmerman) due to some issues with the source code, if I recall.
However, you can still find the last version by doing a search on the
web for pgp658ckt09b3.zip.

2. Get the newly developed TrueCrypt (based on the old E4M Sourcecode):
http://www.truecrypt.tk/

Unfortunately the version of TrueCrypt on this site is for 98/ME. The
later version 1.00a only supported 2000/XP apparently because the 98
support had to be removed due to a copyright dispute with another
company.

The original TrueCrypt site www.truecrypt.org apparently no longer
exists and I can't find a copy of 1.00a anywhere.

This post here
http://www.security-forums.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=89180
explains the situation:
=====================================================
Ye the thing is this, back in the day you had a program called
ScramDisk.
Then there was E4M (encryption for the masses), Scramdisk was only
written for Win9x and could not work on NT/2K/XP.
The Author of E4M gave his code for the NT/2K/XP drivers to the author
of Scramdisk who in turn gave some of his.
Now, the author of Scramdisk works for SecureStar whom are the authors
of DriveCrypt, Scramdisk code was sold to them.

At present SecureStar who are a bunch on incompitent bullies are
claiming that the code for both ScramDisk and E4M belong to them, and
since TrueCrypt is really a continuation of E4M, it thus belongs to
them.

Now there is a legal warefare between the Author of E4M and the idiots
SecureStar.
TrueCrypt stopped work on there program in fear that the author of E4M
may get in further trouble if the law suit does not go his way.
If you look on the discussion forum alt.security.scramdisk you will
see that TrueCrypts guys say they will start work on it again once
this warefare between E4M's author and SecureStar has come to a halt.
But who knows how long that will take.
Just like Sco Unix (may they all burn in hell) I hope SecureStar dies
a painful death as well
===========================================================

Too bad, I was hoping to get both versions.

Hi Jane,
try to get an old freeware version (like 6.0.2i) that includes PGPDisk,
they are still available ... I myself used that version on W98, WNT, W2k
(all versions), ME ..
some say it doesn't run under W XP .. but a friend of mine managed
to install it, nevertheless.

Thanks, Fuzzy, for providing that link!
Yes, that's exactly what I wanted to show Jane.
As to 6.5 in comparison to 6.0.2i - I returned
to the later one for a number of reasons,
especially because it has the least compatibility
problems while providing a maximum of
(useful) features.

The version 1.0 is not *only* for 98/ME but for 98/ME/2000/XP.

No need to look for 1.0a as the only difference to 1.0 is that it does
not support 98/ME.
