freeserve wont check email

Hi trying to fix a problem for a friend. They have an account with
freeserve,when you open outlook express 6 it attempts to check for mail
before a connection has been made, with the result that an error message
comes up. Once a connection has been established they can click send/recieve
and there is no problem.
Any helpfull suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hello Charles,
Check the account settings under tools then accounts, the smtp should be
smtp.freeserve.com and pop3.freeserve.com in the other box under servers.
You will need his enter his user name and in the acount name and his
password in the password box and set the account as default mail account.

Sounds like all that's happening is OE is trying to check for new emails on
startup. Go to:

TOOLS / OPTIONS / GENERAL

and untick the "SEND AND RECEIVE MESSAGES AT STARTUP" option.
