freecom classic sl problem

thought i was being clever, putting all my stuff on an external hard drive,
then if anything goes wrong with the computer you can always transfer your
important files to another computer right? wrong!
i'll try and give all the info i can, my problem began when for some reason
i had to update my ati radeon 7000 series catalyst and control driver, this
knocked out not only the external hard drive in question, namely freecom
classic hard drive sl but also my other ext h/d from toshiba and also my ext
dvd player, after trying a couple of system restore points the other devices
re-appeared but not the classic sl,
i'm using windows xp pro service pack 2 with auto update which i then
re-loaded hoping this would solve the problem, after all it found it the
first time around about a year ago and has worked fine up until now,
so now he computer says 'new hardware found' and describes it as 'cypress
AT2LP RC42' then proceeds to find a driver that helps the computer connect to
the device but none can be found,
i believe the original drivers were -
system 32\drivers\bonifay.sys
file version 1.10 (freecom.sz) which is not digitally signed, and -
system 32\drivers\usbstor.sys
file version 5.1.2600.2180 which is digitally signed,
i have my system set up to 'promt me' if a driver is not digitally signed, i
wonder if i were to set it to accept all drivers would that do the trick?
i have tried installing the driver on the cd but that will only work with
windows 98
i have tried 'filescavenger' and 'recover my files' and both programs are
great for finding files deleted or lost but only for devices that show in 'my
computer' which the classic sl does not, it only shows in device manager.
i'm not interested in the warranty or getting my money back i just need
those files, 200 gigs of them, years of hard work!
somebody suggested the knopix solution, i looked it up but i dont think i
can boot from a cd, actually my internal cd and dvd players have not worked
for a couple of years but its never concerned me as i have the external
dvd/cd recorder.

i have been on the freecom support website but there does'nt seem to be
anyone there, i have sent e-mails and tried to phone them but i get no
response,

can anyone help me please?
jim.

It's common for XP to not recognize external hard drives. There's a zillion
fixes for this problem so do a Google search and try some. One of the things
that happens is XP gets confused by all the drive letters changing with
removeables. Its a good idea to assign permanent letters to your various
external items (like Q, Z, etc.) to eliminate that part of the problem.

thanks for the advice smoker and i am pleased to announce that i have my files back and my external hard drive is working ( at the moment)
i found the answer to my problem here-
http://daltrey.org/linux/cypress.html
the changing the jumpers idea did'nt work for me but the sofware solution did,
hope this helps others recover lost hard drives and files,
all the best,
jimbo.
