I'm looking for free webspace which supports ftp.
Preferable without popups or adds.
Something between 10 and 20 MB.
It's gonna be a non-commercial site.

Thanks in advance :)

So am I. And so is everybody else, for that matter. Good luck in getting
one without popups/ads. If your stuck, Tripod has FTP and 20MB (but
popups/unders galore).

If you do find one, please post back. }:O)

Guess what, I found something:
http://www.100-best-free-webspace.com/index.php

But even if you have webspace for free
you'll never know if such servers are slow
or temporary down or if they all of a sudden disappear
for always and ever :)

So I'm really curious about the experience of others.

I'm using Geocities now, not adsfree,
it's not soannoying as Lycos,
but there's no free ftp support,
and that's not very handy
when there's a lot of stuff you want to upload.

I used to use Geocities, but I left when they terminated FTP support for free
accounts. I *HATE* web based file management.

So, I moved to Tripod. Yeah, it has tons of popups, but I never see them
because my browser (MOzilla) blocks them.

I figure that if my visitors find them annoying enough, they'll do something
about it, not the least of which is dumping IE (the only *cough* mainstream
browser I know of that does nothing to prevent popups).

In my experience, Tripod is fast and reliable. The only drawback (if this at
all matters to you) is that you cannot have a W3C compliant XHTML coded site
there because they mess up your code. HTML 4.01 is unaffected.

Look at http://www.jv-hosting.net/

I know it's not free, but I really think $5 a year -- not a month -- for
25meg of space is worth paying for. And no popups, of course!

Hi there,

I use this one http://freeweb-hosting.com
FREE Unlimited disk space
FREE Unlimited transfers
FAST Servers
FREE Domain Hosting
FREE 24/7 Real FTP Access
FREE Friendly Support
FREE Web Email
FREE Web Promotion

There are no popups. The only downside is that they won't let you upload
anything larger than 85kb. That's ok with me as I use them just for
pictures.

If you ask me, call your ISP. In most cases your ISP has a free webservice,
with no ads. Who knows, perhaps you are already paying for it and you don't
know....

I note from your DTD that you're using 4.01 transitional. Is that
because Tripod can't pass 4.01 strict?

I can't say, as I haven't tried it. I jumped right over to XHTML 1.1 and had
all my local pages validate only to upload them and have Tripod's code
infiltrate them and screw them up.

I'm not even gonna bother with 4.01 strict. I'm happy to have XHTML sorted
out and implemented (if only locally). As you commented previously, what an
education *that* was! }:O)

Valid 1.1 will validate as 4.01 loose? I didn't know that. How are
you closing empty elements?

Sorry, I guess that wasn't clear.

I have two sets of pages: one set is valid HTML 4.01 transitional and the
other XHTML 1.1. I tried uploading my XHTML pages to replace my HTML 4.01
transitional and Tripod buggered the code so that the XHTML no longer
validated.

The code that Tripod adds to the site converts some of the markup to
UPPERCASE. This has no impact on HTML, as you know, but XHTML requires tags
to be in lowercase.

I had to pull the XHTML pages and put the old ones back up. The site
rendered just fine, it just wasn't "legal", for lack of a better term.
Seeing as how I have the utmost respect for web standards, I will hold off on
the XHTML.

Someday, when I can afford to purchase decent web space, I'll use the XHTML
set.

In this case you do get what you pay for.

I used many free sites over the years to post my programs.
Just to watch them change the rules (going pay for) or running ad's when
they said they never would.

And now some of the sites have ad's top and bottom of page, popups/unders,
cookies and god knows what else.

It's worth every penny I spend just to have pages that work.
And I no longer have to worry about where all my users are
going to go when they "change the rules" again.

Obviously.

This is typical (and should be expected. I mean, what do they owe you?
Nothing.

Like I said, when I can afford it.
