City Desk
http://www.fogcreek.com/CityDesk/fog0000000033.html

"CityDesk completely automates the whole process of formatting
pages, creating your home page and navigation, and publishing
the site to a web server."

Complex templates and scripts available for more advanced users.
This free version is limited to 50 pages. First glance - pretty
nice. I'm going to try using it on a small web site I maintain.

My bad. It says 50 pages on one part of the site and 50 files on another.
I've emailed the author for clarification.

It looks and sounds really easy to use, which is what I'm looking for to
launch a feeble little website devoted to my cats, and how silly my wife and
I are for having five of them in a bungalow.

A freeware alternative, which looks intimidatingly more full-featured but
without limitations is this:
http://1site.multimedia-software.net/web_publishing_software/ I think that
this is the one I'm most tempted to try, but "CityDesk" does look tempting.

Regards,
Ian.

The web site says 1Site costs $79.99USD. Have I missed the freeware link?

Yup. It's 50 files, including graphics, css etc. It'd have to be a
pretty small site to squeak in.

Edition

To download the CityDesk 2.0 Starter Edition setup, click here.

The Starter Edition of CityDesk 2.0 lets individual users publish sites
up to 50 pages. And it's completely free!

This download is about 9.5 MB. If you already have an older version of
CityDesk installed on your computer, you can save time by downloading the
2.0 upgrade instead (4 MB).

The current version number is 2.0.19. This is the 2.0 Gold release.

....and it's 50 FILES, not 50 PAGES

Not true, unfortuntely, re the "50 pages" limitation.

It's actually *much* more restrictive.

The *actual* restriction is stated as "You can use it to publish a site
containing no more than 50 files (including articles, pictures, etc.)."

Fifty files is a *lot* different than fifty pages. Even this simple
little index page on my simple little site...

http://blinkynet.net

....uses (including itself) <counting in fingers> <moving to toes> 12
files, even if I *don't* count the three other main pages it links to in
the top and bottom nav menus. (Don't forget to count the external style
sheet. <g>) That's about a quarter of this limited edition's capability,
right there.

Sure...some of those files are shared with other pages. But one can
still see the huge difference between 50 pages and 50 files.

You say you're hooked? No problem! The unlimited upgrade is only $299.

You might have a look at HTML-Kit http://www.chami.com/html-kit/

Another possibility which sounds like just what I've been looking for,
although I have not yet installed it: http://www.enersoft.ch/_sgt/m2_1.htm
It doesn't seem to limit the number of pages it can be used for- the
"penalty" for using the freeware version seems only that a link will exist
on your website (on each page, possibly?) to enersoft. I think I'll take
the plunge and create a feeble little website devoted to our cats this
weekend, if I'm able.

I found the above link while surfing out from a pricelessware link, by the
way.

Regards,
Ian.

Not for beginners and it certainly does not "automate the whole
process of formatting pages, creating your home page and navigation,
and publishing the site to a web server."

Karin

Probably true. I like that type of IDE myself; but then again, I
still use J++.
