I copied this from Kim Komando's newsletter. Anyone know anything
about it?

AND NOW FOR TODAY'S SITE... Free virus scanner

Unfortunately, many people still do not have anti-virus software on
their computer or do not keep it updated. If you're afraid you might
have a virus, there's a place that will check your computer for free.

Trend Micro's HouseCall searches your computer for any kind of virus.
If it detects one on your computer, it will provide you with options
of
removing it. You must have Windows 95 and above and Internet Explorer
4
and above. Sorry, it will not work on Macintosh and Netscape browsers.

Housecall works just fine and is a good idea as a cross-check of your
resident anti-virus program. I clearly is not a substitute for an AV
product running on your PC, however.

Some would say (me for one) that this question is a little like
considering handing your car keys over to a complete stranger
and seeking assurance from others that he is a safe driver. My
main concern would be what else he was doing, and whether
or not he plans on coming back at all.

As for Trend Micro's HouseCall in particular, I would trust
them, but would rather use such a thing as a supplement to a
locally run AV application than as a replacement.

If i didn't have the money to buy a virus scan software AVG Grisoft has a free
Full service software available for download at

Ive used it in the past and it is pretty good considering it's free..

Housecall, it works somewhat. Its not infallable. It does have problems
with deleting files that are in use as usual. Being that it is web based
it is unable to take care of things at startup and may not work from safe
mode. Use housecall once and then get a real virus scanner.

(Side note)
A WORD OF WARNING:

Kim Kommando gives bad advice too often on the radio for my taste and digs
up buzzwords to cover up what she doesnt know. She needs a fact checker,
though with all the mistakes she makes she would spend most of her time
doing retractions. I have heard her dis people that correct her and claim
she knows everything about computers. She uses most of the questions to
push commercial products so I think her palm is getting greased.

If you are in the houston area, on wednesday nights tune in to FM 90.1
KPFT. A show called Tech Bytes comes on about then, these dudes have been
on the air over several years and they admit to their mistakes and they
are in the computer tech and administration field.

Hi,

If you listen to her show, consider it to be no more than an
"entertainment."

If you read her newsletter, consider it to be no more than an
"advertisement."

She is probably wrong twice as often as she is right. And on most every
technical question I hear on her radio program, she usually tells the person
something that is true but completely misses the 'real' answer or way to
solve the problem.

She's amusing but SO often she misses the target with her answers. And she
does hawk rather mediocre software a lot of the time.
