I live in Canada and have just assembled a new pc part by part. I bought my
Windows XP Pro OEM on Ebay and will be using it with my new system. IS it
possible to qualify for the free Vista upgrade? The system will be completed
this week and the Windows has not been installed.

Joe

No, the coupon currently applies to systems purchased through OEMs such as
Dell, Gateway and HP for example.

Or, Newegg.com, Just FYI.

Any XP OEM purchased through Newegg.com will be a generic OEM. Does
this mean there will be generic OEM Vista? Or is it a retail upgrade
the coupon is good for?

Is the free upgrade coupon any good without buying a new PC? I leaped
before I looked and bought Media Center from Newegg and looking at the
upgrade coupon it mentions that it is good with the puchase of a qualifying
PC. I went to the site everyone will be required to initiate their upgrade
and found this:

Michael;
It would appear that your coupon is worthless since you did not buy it with
a computer.
All I can suggest is contact Newegg and/or Microsoft for clarification.

That is not correct; Newegg was explictly advertising the free upgrades
for OEM copies of Windows XP bought from Newegg.

Of course there will be a generic OEM Vista; that will be the product
that "small" system builders {so called "white box" builders} will use.
But it's not clear what you will receive when you get the upgrade.
Normally, OEM products are "full product" (e.g. not upgrade) only. The
people getting the XP to Vista upgrades through the upgrade program may
get a "special" version made only for this program, or they might get a
retail upgrade package, or they might get an OEM "full product" package.
I don't think that we will know this with certainty until people begin
actually receiving these upgrades.

Just to update, I emailed Newegg about the coupon without buying PC and got
this reply:
Dear Customer,

"Thank you for contacting Newegg.

It's fine, you still qualify for it. Microsoft assuming you are able to
obtain the software means you have a qualifying PC.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please visit our FAQs page.

Thank you, "
