You can click the link at the bottom of their e-mails to unsubscribe. When
I did that, they magically stopped coming.

I signed up (using my throwaway account for site registrations) and
successfully downloaded their software and have never had any spam
from this company. I don't know about other people's experience, but
I don't think you need to neccessarily have to be put off but having
to register and this site.

I see that although it is free you still have to register it by telephone
within 30 days (0800 number)

Has anyone tried this yet?
Do they ask for any personal information?

I gave up using any of the "free" offers from Serif a couple of years
ago. Not only did I get spam, they were sending me junk mail through
the post and -- worst of all -- even had a sales force that called my
home phone number to see if they could flog me upgrades.

(Yes: I was dumb enough to register with my real postal address and
telephone number...live and learn.)

I did, I never had that much Spam from any of my Serif software. It was
about 3 years ago when I registered. As I recall, it was typical
registration stuff - Name, email address, where did you hear about us, age,
favorite magazine, etc. I don't recall them asking for a phone number. No
credit card info requested.

I always felt Serif treated me well. I upgraded the free PhotoPlus V5
editor with their version 7 (even better!) I also bought their PagePlus 8
PDF edition, because it has the ability to create web sites and create PDF
files.

Chris.

Yep, I downloaded their Photoplus 5.5 and am quite pleased with the
product.
As to information requested, they asked for an e-mail address to send
you an access code after download and apart from that they'd like to
know your name and postal code. That was all and so far I have heard
nothing else from Serif. No spam or phone calls or letters. However you
are asked to register within 30 days, but you can do that on their
website or by free phone. And having said that, I have been using
Drawplus and Pageplus on and off for years and have not been bombarded
with unwanted bumph!

My experience was entirely different. The spammed me very badly.
However, I suppose one could simply give them a spamdump email address
to get the registration code.

You live and learn...
I used a junk name/address (just very obvious junk characters, with no
attempt to make it look real) and I used a throwaway hotmail address for
the email. They can spam that as much as they like as it will be closed
tomorrow!

Chris.

They will spam the hell out of you. They did me, and when I tried
"unsubscribing", it did no good. Now I have a different email address
and they can drop dead. My advice to everybody is to steer clear of
anything from Serif.

I use now serif products (Draw Pus 4 and Page Plus 8) 2 years long and
I had no other mails than the registration code. For one roduct I had
regsitered by phone, the other one was registered through mail (with my
real mail address).

Serif products are very good and I'm very happy tou use them.

A very unwise thing to do.

Well, I'm very happy that it worked out for you that way. However, my
experience was entirely different.
After I registered PhotoPlus5 foolishly providing my main (non
spamdump) email address, I got spammed to death by Serif and they
ignored my (multiple) requests to stop doing so. I'm very happy that I
have the common sense enough never to give out my home phone number
and/or address, or I would probably still be getting junk mail and
also phone calls in the middle of the night. Others have posted
messages to this group to the effect that this was their experience.
Besides, I don't think that their programs are all that great, and
I ought to know since I use photo editing programs all the time. If
you want a REAL GOOD freeware program for editing photos, go here:

http://www.photofiltre.com/

Screw Serif, all their programs and the horse they rode in on. Their
crap will never reside on my system ever again.

John,

Agreed that PhotoFiltre is a good solution to PhotoPlus.

Do you have viable alternatives to DrawPlus (vector drawing) and PagePlus
(desktop publishing)?

While OOo offers pretty good solutions, I'm looking for stand-alone
programs.

Bob,
Sorry, I don't have alternatives for those programs since I neither
make vector images nor desktop publish. However, these links may help:
