Is there any free software which will securely encrypt a CDR for me. I scan
my bank statements and bills and have them stored on my computer. Some of
these i want to keep, although they are a couple of years old.

I would like a program for which i can burn the old stuff to a CDR, but have
it password protected with good encryption so that i can archive them.

I have tried TrueCrypt, but as much as it is great for Hard Drive
encryption, it is very very slow for encryption to CDR.

Cheers

A faster way would be to create a 650 MB truecrypt container on your
hard drive, and fill that up files. Then burn the single true crypt
container file to the CD-R. If you need to access the files on the
CD-R, you can mount the CD-R file directly from CD, or you could copy
the CD-R file from CD to hard drive, then mount the file from the hard
drive.

However, I caution you about using encrypted archives, especially on
CD. One bad bit on your CD can cause you to lose the entire CD. With
non-encrypted data, you might lose some files, but you are less likely
to lose the entire CD. For the same reason, I do not recommend
copying files to a single large zip file and then storing the zip on
the CD.

Perhaps you can provide physical security for your backup cds, so that
you can leave them unencrypted.

Those programs are not really ideal for what i want to do. I will be
referring to the encrypted files quite often, but would like them to remain
secure. I would need to de-crypt, then save updated file (assuming i had
been working on them), then re-encrypt them. That's a bit of a hassle.

I'd rather a program which would protect the files and when i put the CDR in
my PC it would ask for a single password to open all files for me to work
on, similar to what TrueCrypt does.

I have tried for a few months now to get such a program but keep hitting
problems.

Thanx anyway !
