In some registry editors, as in some browsers, Favorites are called
Bookmarks. Sorry for the confusion.
INTERNET EXPLORER
You can create folders and subfolders under Favorites, and when you click
"Add to Favorites," you have the choice of whether to put it in an existing
folder, create a new folder, or not put it in a folder but in the main
Favorites directory.
REGISTRY EDITORS
You cannot create folders and subfolders in the Favorites for the RegEdit
that comes with Windows. When you click "Add to Favorites" your registry key
is added to the Favorites menu, but you can't create folders. After a while,
you just get a long list of unsorted keys in your Favorites that you can't
sort into folders and subfolders. If you use the registry a lot, this is
VERY inconvenient! Many shareware registry editors let you sort your
Favorites (Bookmarks) into folders, but they have a lot of features. Having
more features does not necessarily make the program easier to use. The price
for many of them is a bit too high, and some of them do not have a nice
interface. That's why I'm looking for the best freeware registry editor.
- RegAlyzer lets you create the folders, but its Win9x interface is poor and
it is buggy and unstable on XP.
- RegCool, which I said previously does not allow you to create folders for
the Bookmarks, actually does let you create them. It has a nice XP/Explorer
interface, the search bar at the top, and is simple to use. So far, this is
my best option for a registry editor.
- RegEditX has the same plain Win9x interface as RegEdit and does not let
you create folders. It does, however, have the search bar at the top.
- RegHance has a nice interface but no search bar and the top and does not
let you create folders. I keep it installed only for compatibility with
Ad-Aware SE Pro.
- Registrar Lite (free) allows you to create folders and has the search bar
at the top, but this program is not as easy to use. It also has the plain
Win9x interface.
- Registry Explorer Standard Edition (free) has adware, so I am not going to
test that one.
Unless anyone has another program for me to test, I think I'm sticking with
RegCool for the time being.
