Hi a very basic question

My pc has 1 gig of ddr ram, but system info shows only 754 meg free

Task manager shows no programs running, im sure im being daft, but what is using the rest

Thank you in adavance.

Some part of the Ramis used by system components which do not show up as
programs in task manager

XP, like win98 and it's predecessors is profligate in it's
use of RAM. Most of the operating system loads into RAM in
an effort to speed up a cumbersome system. The more RAM
you have the more it will consume. If you're light on RAM
it goes into a psuedo RAM on your hard disk.

One virtue of XP though is that it does clear the RAM when
you close programs so you won't run out when running
nothing as often as W98 did. Memturbo, a shareware
freebie, was the complete answer to this in W98 but it
isn't needed in XP.

MS are plainly well aware of this which may be why the old
SYSMON utility, which demonstrated this effect, is no
longer included.

Hope this helps.
