I don't know if you guys know but now us Brits can get a free ipod!

I must delete referral links to that place every day! I know you weren't posting a referral link, so I'm not deleting it - but take this as a preemptive warning against anyone who does ;)
 
Consider this a naive question if you like but what is all this free Ipod thing about?

Believing that nothing's really free, what's in it for them??

To people who may not know me, this is not a wind up question!

The BBC news article covers it better than I can, but people basically sign up to a pyramid scheme to refer people to claim a free iPod...

Technically, I am sure some people do get a free iPod - but they have to pester (spam!) so many people to get others to sign up. Its a great way of marketing really, as there must have been over 30 posts deleted about them on the forum, and I've had lots of e-mails from people asking me to join too.

As with any pyramid scheme there are far more losers than winners. The free iPod company must get loads of visitors and people who only manage to refer one or two people - and hence make loads of many from affiliate schemes.

As an example - if you go to google and type in "health insurance", "home loan" or "credit card" - any of those ads on the right hand side of the page will earn the affiliate manager anywhere from £7-75 depending on what someone signs up for. Its basically free iPods (£150ish?) in return for 5 sign ups worth quite a bit.
