Anyone know of a folder/file lock software that works under 98, 2000 and XP?

TIA

1) Try AxCrypt.
AxCrypt File Encryption Software - Free Personal Privacy and Security for
Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2K/XP with AES-128 File Encryption, Compression and
transparent Decrypt and Open in the original application.
http://axcrypt.sourceforge.net/

2) NEVER post your personal contact information [your sig line] in a
newsgroup (or forums or anywhere else for that matter). It's bad enough if
you don't munge your email addy, but home phone numbers and mailing
address?? Yikes.

Thanks, I didn't realize that was enabled.

Folder Access <http://www.topdownloads.net/software/view.php?id=11463>. It's
shareware, but it locks 4 folders for free. Note that this utility LOCKS
folders (i.e., blocks access to them); it doesn't encrypt the contents.

What I don't like about Folder Access is that you can still access
the folder from the command line. Also if the locked folder is a sub-
folder in a network share you can still read it from another
computer.

Are you sure about that? I just tried that and was told that the folder,
" .{21EC2020[...]}", was being used by another process.

Can't comment on this.

Or is it accessible if you boot into DOS?

No, sorry, I was wrong. I guess I mixed up things. I've probably used
another program and thought it was this one.
I can't remember which one but after installing Folder Access I'm
sure it was another one. It also behaved different, it completely
hided the folder when using Windows Explorer but the folder could
still be accessed using a command window or when viewing it from
another system.

Mea Culpa.

Kind regards, Gert

One problem I noticed is that if the person copies the locked file to
another computer then installs Folder access, the file can be opened without
a password. I had the file on a logical partition, then re-installed
everything on the C dirive. I installed folder Access fresh and I was able
to access the previously folder contents without a password.

Not a problem. I suppose my recommendation stands. ^_^

Folder Access creates folders, not files, and these kind-of-virtual folders
can't be copied or moved at all.
