Hi group,

I've been reading and learning here for the last few months (for
which, thanks!). Here's a question--

I'm looking for a free firewall alternative to ZoneAlarm with a system
tray icon that shows (as the ZA icon does) traffic in and out. At work
I'm on a connection that drops out frequently, so an icon that shows
the traffic is very helpful to me. Any suggestions? I've tried
Outpost, which doesn't have this feature. I'd just go ahead and try
others, but since they all strongly suggest removing any pre-existing
firewall first, I thought I'd ask first and save the uninstalls.

Thanks,

Michael

If it's just for the traffic, then you'd probably be best off using a
program that is specifically for traffic monitoring (such as a port
monitor), rather than a firewall.

Sygate has system icon (arrows) that show blocked /accepted traffic. If you
dont use any proxy servers/filters such as proxomitron , naviscope etc then
its a good choice. If you do use such servers /filters then be aware that
anything that connects to the proxy will be allowed if the proxy itself is
allowed (check out sygate forums and loopback issues)

Thanks for the replies.

Also Kerio 2.xx shows an arrow on its tray icon: green for allowed traffic ,
red for blocked traffic.
However, you can't see from the icon if it is in or out traffic.
