I've already checked Pricelessware and a few other sites I've picked up
in alt.comp.freeware. Some of the stuff Google suggests looks a little
suspicious. So, anyone have a link to a decent Fax app. for XP?

TIA

Such as the built-in fax software? Works like a charm :)

St\rt, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows
components...FAX. You'll need the installation CD though.

You might like to try the XP build-in fax feature but you need to
install it from the XP CD.

Goto Control Panel > Add or Remove programs > Add/Remove Windows
Components (tab) > Fax Services

Since upgrading to XP a couple of years ago I have used only the built-in
fax program and have been pretty happy with it. But before I used a program
call CallCenter, which was very good and made it easy to receive as well as
send faxes. It also has voive mail and answering maching functionality which
I liked. It's still available and can be found at:

http://www.v3inc.com/freecc.htm

CallCenter is a FREE 32-bit, integrated fax, voicemail and data
communications application with a simple to use interface providing fax send
and receive functionality, basic (single mailbox) answering machine
capability, and sophistcated data communications.

FREE CallCenter fully supports Windows 95/98, Windows NT3.51/4.0,
Windows2000, and Windows XP

Doh! Always used a standalone fax so I'd never even bothered to check
for the XP built in Fax app.
This is for an acquaintance in another state who called seeking
recommendations for a WinFax alternative.
Thanks for the information.

From the web page:
NOTE: CallCenter does NOT support ISDN or Cable Modems!

Yes, of course. This is not fax over IP. The OP requested a replacement for
WinFax Pro, and I think this qualifies. Since ISDN and ADSL allow for more
than one device to be connected, you can connect your telephone line to the
computer without disconnecting the Internet connection. You can be online
and still send faxes through the telephone line. It works for me.

You need a dial-up modem to send or receive fax, in case you don't
know about it.
DSL modem don't do faxing.
