Free Download Manager Question

I found Free Download Manager on the PL 2005 list. Seems this one does
work with the Moz/Firefox extension FlashGot. The author's page claims
that Free Download Manager can increase download speed up to 600%. I'm
wondering how well this function would work on Windows XP with a dialup
connection?

I used it for a while with no problems. Didn't like it's mandatory
default download folder so went back to Fresh Dld.

Tools/Download options/New Download.

Uncheck 'Save download to its group's appropriate folder', then change the
default to folder of your choice. Check the 'Save...' box, and you have your
choice, not theirs.

That is, if I understood what you did not like about it.

I do not see any speed up with my dialup...it uses multiple
connections to download parts of a file all at one time...

If you are already maxing out your download bandwidth...will be
no change....

IME, downloading in parts doesn't help at all.
I have 33.6k dialup (due to line noise) and haven't noticed any
improvements.

Maybe it helps with broken downloads?

A download manager devides downloads in pieces, and downloads them
simultaneously. If you have plenty of bandwidth, you can increase your
speed by downloading sceral pices of a file at the same time. But you can
only download something on the maximum of your modems speed. If you're
alreay downloading at your maximum speed, deviding the download will not
help increasing the speed. This is, in my experience, 999 out of 1000 times
the case with dial-up.
However, a download manager can be very helpful for people on dial-up to
set a download at a time you prefer downloading something, and resume
partially finished downloads.

actually anything that manages downloads is a download manager. what
you are referring to is a multi-threaded download manager.

more importantly, you are distributing the load over several inet pipes.
so downloading half from mirror A, and half from mirror B, can often
be faster than only using mirror A. this only works when your bandwidth
is higher than the target's effective bandwidth.
But you can
only download something on the maximum of your modems speed. If you're

a downloader with resume feature e.g. wget. this makes even 650 meg
ISOs possible on dialup.

the best upgrade on dialup is probably a v 92 modem. it will increase
the upload speed substantially, and potentially adds more compression on
download. obviously compressed archives can't be further compressed[1],
but text can be.
