actually, the one that comes with XP while good, has flaws. depending on the
amount of fragmentation that is in the HD.

thus causing you to have to run the Defragmenter 4 to 10 times for acomplete
defragmentation.
:P
not a complaint, just a flaw. :P

I recently spent some time investigating the same thing. There's very
little available, and what is available is limited in some way.

What disappointed me most was to find that most of the commercial
stuff uses the same defrag engine that Microsoft wrote (e.g., a
different UI is provided for the same routine), so I don't expect it's
much better.

The best thing going as far as freeware goes, and I forget the name
but someone will be able to tell you here, is one that lets you defrag
at boot time, so there are less files being used.

I can run XP's defrag and when it says it's done, I'll still see
fragmented files. Run it again, and that'll shrink some. That's why
someone else posted "you have to run it 7 times".

So, if you find anything better, let us know!

I found Andrei Gaceff's DefragNT,

v2.21

Introduction One of the limitations of the Windows NT/2000
defragmentation interface is that it is not possible to defragment files
that are open for exclusive access. Thus, standard defragmentation
programs can neither show you how fragmented your paging files or
Registry hives are, nor defragment them. Paging and Registry file
fragmentation can be one of the leading causes of performance
degradation related to file fragmentation in a system.

PageDefrag uses advanced techniques to provide you what commercial
defragmenters cannot: the ability for you to see how fragmented your
paging files and Registry hives are, and to defragment them. In
addition, it defragments event log files and Windows 2000/XP hibernation
files (where system memory is saved when you hibernate a laptop).

PageDefrag works on Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

Vincent, you should consider upgrading your version of Xnews. There
have been many bug fixes and improvements since L5 was released -- not
the least of which is proper yENC handling. If you have had difficulty
downloading binaries, this is probably why.

You're kidding right? Microsoft has never written a defrag engine that
made it into any of their operating systems. From DOS 5 until Windows ME
they used a stripped down version of Symantec's SpeedDisk. NT4 never
came with one. Not sure about Windows2000, but XP uses Executive
Software's Diskeeper engine. MS is best at purchasing and integrating
someone elses technology, not creating their own, save OS's and Office
suites, and that is debatable.

I don't know if there is but I find the one that comes with XP to be
very good.

Howdy --

Here is a very capable one:

Command line operation. An option is to create a simple batch
file to run with desired arguments. If you place in System32
folder it will be in the *path*.

Vincent, you should consider upgrading your version of Xnews.

Thanks for your kindness. I still use this one because I've installed the
latest version (5.04.25) on another computer and did,nt found the chance,
searching "all" newsgroups, to limit the search to the ones starting with
the string inserted (that in my version I find clicking the "[" symbol to
the left of search box).
If you have had difficulty downloading binaries, this is probably why.

I don't download binaries ... bye and happy new (?) year.
