Free Beta not free?

I received an invitation card with a magazine for a "free" copy of
Visual Studio 2005 Beta 2. The card says "Enter this code and receive
free shipping." I went to the specified site,
www.microsoft.com/getthebetas, and after I entered all of the
requested information I was asked for a credit card number to pay the
handling and shipping. What gives?

VS beta is free (otherwise you'd be out $1200 :-) ), they're making you
pay for shipping the DVD(s). I'm surprised they don't have a download
version - I thought they did before, though it was bloody gigantic..

It was free a couple of weeks ago. I haven't received it yet, but was never
asked for a credit card.

It was free when I ordered it too, and it has since arrived. Neat little DVD
case containing about 3 DVDs.

Which country do you live in Jon? Maybe they charge for shipping to some
countries and not others, or maybe demand was higher than they expected, or
maybe they just shipped the first x thousand copies for free then started
charging... who knows?

Chris.
