An automatic update does not work for me right now so I wanted to download
an update file for a manual update. I cannot find an incremental update for
a free version on the website, only a download for the whole software?

Whats the problem with the auto update?Is it the slow server problem?.. as
more servers can be added.Just do a search on AVG posts from the last few
weeks regarding updating.

What the problem is I do not know. The symptoms are that my scheduled
updates do not work and when I request Update now I get ,eventually, an
error message that the connection could not be established. (I have a
permanent connection via cable). I
have now downloaded last three increments and updated manually

Strange....It maybe worth checking whether you have some sort of ad/proxy
filter like proxomitron etc or firewall programme that is blocking akamai
servers as avg updates usually use these servers.

I do not think this will be the case, it used to work OK until not so long
ago and I made no changes to the configuration of my PC. I do not know what
the proxomitron is and I certainly did not install it knowingly. I should
not be saying that, but I do not have a firewall running on the PC and I
have Win98SE. It may work next time I try and then again not work for a long
period after that which is what happened before.

I have the same problem. It appears that Grisoft determines if you are
connected to the net by simply attempting to connect to the update server.
If the update server is unresponsive (for _any_ reason) AVG comes back
saying it can't connect to the net. Kinda dumb but that's they way they do
it. You're better off changing the url.ini file to this:

[SERVER_NAME]
1=free.grisoft.cz
2=www.grisoft.com
3=www.grisoft.com

[SERVER_URL]
1=http://free.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe
2=http://www.grisoft.com/akm/softw/60/fe/
3=http://www.grisoft.com/softw/60/fe/
Actual URL=2

that should cure the problem.

The cynic in me thinks that AVG are restricting server access in an attempt
to persuade a percentage of 'free AVG' users over to the paid-for product.
Strange logic if that is the case, as if the current free version (without
manual server workarounds) is the best carrot they can offer, then I
certainly wouldn't entertain parting with good money for another of their
products.

These 'AVG Free' access issues have been around to a greater or lesser
extent for months now and are the main reason I switched to 'Avast Free'
some six months ago, I've never looked back.

Sorry i cant be of more help.If adding the extra servers doesnt work ,and
akamai servers are not blocked, then it may be worth considering switching
to avast if the manual updating gets tedious.I use avast on w98se and until
two days ago AVG as an on demand scanner.However using both for quite a
while ive uninstalled AVG as it offers no advantage over avast even, as a
"backup" scanner.

There were originally 2 urls in the free version ,the www. grisoft.com and
www.grisoft.cz servers.However with the introduction of ver.seven , the
server was limited to the free.grisoft.com server , mainly to limit
bandwidth so that paying customers got a better service over non paying.I do
agree with you howver that an antivirus prog that cant update (sometimes for
days on end)because of bandwidth issues is pretty useless.I also tend to
think that grisoft will eventually stop the re inputting of the "old" server
entries by modifying the programme or upgrade thier servers to cope.I too
have switched to avast completly.

It did not work at first but when I changed manually a selection of a
download server in the AVG Control Center to www.grisoft.com it did! There
is difference between your file and the one at www.ka25.ndo.co.uk/av.htm.
Any explanation?

Tried this but to no avail.

I think it was because I did not realize that I have to manually select the
alternative download server in the AVG Control Center. I used the other
suggestion made to me which is slightly different. Are these differences
significant in any way?

roman
the difference between the download at ka25 and the one on here is that the
one shown above only specifies 2 url's whereas the files lists 3! an obvious
typo, if 3 url's are listed then that line should read Actual URL=3 as it
does in the ka25 file

There are other diferences, namely in second URL lines ?

This morning I could not get AVG's update to work on any of the
four possibilities and even a manual update would not function.
Fortunately, I have Avast, EZTrust and F-Prot for DOS which do
not have this problem. I guess I'll just not bother to waste my
time trying to keep AVG updated and monitor the situation awhile
to see if they show any interest in correcting the problem. If
not, no big loss, considering the PIA its been since I got it.

Nope, no explanation. ;-)

I never been to that site so chances are it will be different. I may have
modified that file several times and not paid enough attention to my typos
or the repeated url. When I posted it here, I should have gave it a once
over. Sorry 'bout that. But at least you now know the problem is not the
program so much as the servers at Grisoft.

If the url file from ka25 is better, you should use that. Or if it's working
now then remember, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Good luck and happy virus hunting.
