I do not think this will be the case, it used to work OK until not
so long ago and I made no changes to the configuration of my PC. I
do not know what the proxomitron is and I certainly did not install
it knowingly. I should not be saying that, but I do not have a
firewall running on the PC and I have Win98SE. It may work next time
I try and then again not work for a long period after that which is
what happened before.

I have the same problem. It appears that Grisoft determines if you
are connected to the net by simply attempting to connect to the
update server. If the update server is unresponsive (for _any_
reason) AVG comes back saying it can't connect to the net. Kinda dumb
but that's they way they do it. You're better off changing the
url.ini file to this:
[SERVER_NAME]
1=free.grisoft.cz
2=
www.grisoft.com
3=
www.grisoft.com
[SERVER_URL]
1=
http://free.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe
2=
http://www.grisoft.com/akm/softw/60/fe/
3=
http://www.grisoft.com/softw/60/fe/
Actual URL=2
that should cure the problem.
