Can you recommend a free antivirus program to run on a small network (of
about 8x Win98 machines) at a not-for-profit organization? I will install it
on each machine if necessary.

I checked out pricelessware.org and the two programs that seem worth
considering are AVG & Avast! Can anyone with experience make a
recommendation?

I'll post this on the 24hr help newsgroup too.

thanks

I am not a AV expert, but, I have been using the AVG6 Free version
anti-virus program for the past year, and I have never had a virus down on
my system. It is compatible with most OS's, user friendly, light weight, not
a resource hog, does it's thing without a lot of fanfare, and it can use the
heuristics as well. It can also be set to auto update if you did install it
on each PC. I have never used it on a network system, but, perhaps someone
else here has and can offer some information on that aspect.

Check here for more information on the program, and if you want, download
and try a copy of the Free version on one of the computers. See for
yourself how it works.

I have used AVG free for over 1 year & am currently using Avast. Both
are fine programs. Avg seems a little lighter on resources, however,
Avast has some advantages:
1. Automatic updates, once when you connect & then every 4 hours after
2. It scans e-mails before they hit your inbox
3. You have the ability to turn on AV protection for 9 Peer 2 Peer
programs
4. You have the ability to turn on AV protection for 6 Instant Messaging
programs.

If you do decide on AVG look in the archives to add 2 more connections
to update the virus database, as the default seems to be overloaded.

Remember whatever program you choose is #1 better than no AV product, #2
up to the user to keep it running & updated, #3 not 100 % effective
against new viruses.
