is there any good (!) free antivirus software for personal usage out there ?

Really? I suppose it was too good to last <sigh>.

I don't object to buying software but I do think that there is a need for
free antivirus software. So many folk I know have never updated the
antivirus package that came with their machines and the chances of them
*paying* yearly for the updates is next to zilch. Of course it wouldn't
matter if it didn't affect all the rest of us.

I'd happily pay a reasonable up-front fee for an anti-virus program as long
as the udates fees were reasonable. Some companies don't make it very clear
as to how much updates are going to cast after the first year.

There have been recurring tales of woe from folks who either
misinterpret the terms of update costs, or are actually being swindled
by carelessness or design, from some of the well known AV companies.
F-Prot for DOS is still a freebie, and with its very frequent updates,
remains my favorite.

When free IPE changed to Etrust, I accepted their original discount
offer for registered users of IPE, which was only good for 30 days.

I don't think you can beat the price on ET's annual renewal fee,
if you are thinking of 'buying' an AV. First time registration is
cheaper than most also, but not the $10 I paid.

I expect free Avast to disappear soon too, but until then, it works
great on my Win98SE. Avast and F-Prot for DOS are my 'free' backup AVs.
On dialup, it's small, fast updates for Avast, large, slow updates for
F-Prot. Watch for a special discount for 'early' registration on AVG or
Avast. You might catch a good deal too.
