everything Ive tried so far has compatiblity issues

Yes. Look in the Security Center. You will find the link to TrendMicro.
MS and TrendMicro partnered to give you a free antivirus program.

Thanks I will look into that

AVG Free Edition runs in Vista RC1.

PC-Cillin from TrendMicro / partnered with MSFT for Vista:

it's free to trial, but it does only run until October and is also a
Beta-Product

You should have told him that, too.

Nonetheless it is working fine in all Vista-Builds.

Avast will try to have this month a new RC1-compatible Free suite of their
Home-Product I have read.

ClamWin is free and a small download, works with vista rc1.

I have the latest AVG Free - it will not start up on reboot if UAC is turned
on - so I have to manually start it - or leave UAC off.

The problem with AVG is not really UAC, but the Windows Defender is blocking
this program on autostart. And even manually allowing it does not help.

The same as to AVG is happening to Avira Antivir, which here in germany is
the number one free virus-scanner.

The last Avast Home and Norton AntiVirus also not working by some other
misbehaviour and so on..

there is really something wrong with the Antivirus-program-support in this
Vista-Version.

It is a rumour going on that Microsoft has set some virus-programs on the
blacklist by accident.

Thanks Sascha,

I know this is still a beta, problems are to be expected.
I have Vista on a separate HD and can afford to fool around with it a lot -
fun factor very high.

if this can help, i use clammail for email virus scanning and clamwin for
ondemand scan, not yet found an onaccess antivirus working yet
