I tried Mailwasher for a while, but it gave errors. Shame, because I liked
it.
Using Windows XP Prof, Outlook Express.
Are there alternative free anti-spam programs, as good as or even better
than Mailwasher?

Thnx,
EDJO

Thanx! Think I'm going to use this...

G-Lock SpamCombat works very well. It allows you to choose from a generous
number of DNSBL filters, has Bayesian filtering, and a Whitelist. It can
also be set to run automatically, deleting Spam from your mail server
without your intervention- once you trust it enough to not delete "real"
email from the server. Training the Bayesian filter is an important step in
letting SpamCombat gain your trust.

Whether you set it to run automatically or launch it manually, it allows you
to delete Spam before downloading it. And that's a really good thing.

Ian.

Excellent program BUT not as good as MW in one regard. It shows
HTML mail in raw code. Very annoying IMO. MW shows HTML as text.
Very much easier to read when scanning emails quickly.

I haven't used SpamPal, so I can't really compare. I've used MailWasher
though, and still have it installed. SpamCombat seems flag much more Spam
than MailWasher does, and I don't like having to fight with MailWasher's
"bounce" feature, which is a really bad idea.

Ian.

I just had a look at the SpamPal site. It strikes me that both MailWasher
and SpamCombat have a key advantage over SpamPal in that they allow you to
delete spam from the mail server without having to download any of it.
SpamPal sorts your messages as you receive them, so you end up downloading
all of the messages- spam, virus attachments and all. MailWasher and
SpamCombat only download the headers, a fairly quick process, so that you
can scrutinize all the messages before downloading any of them.

Ian.

I've tried a lot of spamfilters, including Mailwasher, but there is
just one that is the absolute best: K9.

It has to learn what's spam so the only thing you have to do in the
beginning is correct K9 when it's wrong. Label good mail as good and
spam as spam. After a few days, or after just one day when you get a
lot of spam, K9 learns and doesn't make mistakes anymore. But no
worry, K9 doesn't delete mail on the server, but it only adds [SPAM]
in the beginning of end of the subjectline. So when you ad a
messagerule to your emailprogram to move mails with [SPAM] in the
subject to a specified folder you never miss a mail and you have a
clear seperate overview of your spam and normal mail.

Download it from: http://www.keir.net/k9.html

Good luck,

Excellent program BUT not as good as MW in one regard. It shows
HTML mail in raw code. Very annoying IMO. MW shows HTML as text.
Very much easier to read when scanning emails quickly.

added in G-Lock SpamCombat version 2.0 beta
ability to show a safe HTML preview of the message. No pictures are
actually downloaded, no hidden scripts, or codes are executed. Now you can
switch between three preview modes: HTML/Message Source/Message body
(decoded message).

If you would like to participate in beta testing SpamCombat v2.0, please,
send an email to (e-mail address removed). Additional instructions on how to
download the beta release software and report the results of your testing
will be included in the notification e-mail.

and many more things

Added: Complex Filter letting you write a script containing different
functions, procedures, or operators to compare any header fields to the
specified value and classify the email as spam or good depending on the
result.

Added: option to set a POP3 account as spam trap. All emails coming to this
POP3 account are automatically marked as spam. The Bayesian filter learns
from these emails as well.

Added: option to specify the message# processing emails will start from.
This option allows to skip the first xx messages on the server and start
processing from the next message.

Added: Use Safe Deletion Mode option in the Accounts settings. Check this
option if you notice that SpamCombat deletes wrong emails from the server.
When you use safe deletion mode, SpamCombat compares the headers of all the
emails on the server to the headers of the emails you checked for deletion
and deletes right messages.

Added: ability to choose a deletion mode for all the filters except the
Whitelist: spam emails can be either moved to Deleted folder in the
SpamCombat, or deleted permanently.

Added: ability to select a folder on the HDD to store deleted messages.

Added: Find Target option in the Deleted Items folder which allows a user to
locate a deleted email on the HDD.

Removed: option to enable/disable message cache. The cache is always enabled
now. To clear the message cache, click Clear MessageID Cache button on the
SpamCombat Toolbar, or select Clear MessageID Cache option under File menu.

Added: ability to show a safe HTML preview of the message. No pictures are
actually downloaded, no hidden scripts, or codes are executed. Now you can
switch between three preview modes: HTML/Message Source/Message body
(decoded message).

Added: ability set the Expire period for the whitelist and blacklist
conditions. When the expire period is over, the filter item is automatically
deactivated.

Added: new fields to whitelist/blacklist emails: Message Source (RAW message
code), IP Address and Entire Header.

Merged: Whitelist: Message Header/Body and IP Address; Blacklist: Message
Header/Body and IP Address.

To whitelist/blacklist emails by the sender's IP address(es), use IP Address
field in the Whitelist/Blacklist.

Added: new buttons Save Bookmark and Goto Bookmark under the grid in the
SpamCombat main screen. Save Bookmark option allows the program to remember
an email within the grid. If you have a huge number of emails within the
grid to check and you want to focus on a selected message later, click Save
Bookmark button under the grid to remember it and continue parsing the
emails. To return to the remembered message, click Goto Bookmark button.

Added: the program remembers checked for deletion emails if you process the
same messages more than once.

Added: Color Theme settings allowing you to show emails within the grid in
the program's main screen by different colors depending on how they are
classified.

Added: ability to change the font of the SpamCombat interface. To change the
font, click View and select Text Size -> Larger, Medium, Small.

Added: ability to view the SpamCombat statistics: general statistics on
processed emails, assembled diagram, filters rating, and efficiency of the
Bayesian filter.

Changed: the Blacklist filters provided by default with the SpamCombat 2.0
will be marked by the navy color in your list of Blacklist conditions. You
can edit them as you want. The default system Blacklist filters may be
changed or updated later. Not working regular expressions are marked by red.
You should either correct, or de-activate them.

A few changes in the General and Automation settings.

Excellent program. I'm using 1.51 now, but keeping a finger on 2.0.
After the first day installed, it marked spam that even IHateSpam (payware)
didn't detect. And it detected it very precise.
The option of looking at serverlevel (same as MailWasher) is also great.

Thnx!

I've been using it for a whole day now. I must admit I love mailwasher
as it does just what I want, and after getting some experience with
rules it's accuracy for premarking is almost perfect. So I rejected
Spampal, specially as the mailwasher delete from server type function is
very secondary in spampal, and I don't want spam on my box at all if I
can help it.

M/w is very fast compared with Spamcombat, but spamcombat may be in a
learning phase.

I don't know why I should have to separately delete spam from the Hard
drive (Spamcombat), I never wanted them there in the first place.

Another thing I do with M/w is to delete good mail after downloading it;
I have set my email prog not to delete after fetching mail - next time I
open m/w, the good mail is still there, so I delete it then. Means if my
emial prog suddenly turns rogue on me and mashes me mail I can still get
it - just belt and braces. Spamcombat can do this too.

There seems to be no "select all" button, which is a bit of a PITA,
Shift/click selection is quite hard when you can't see all of a page
(and there's no scroll bars.)

I think it's rather over-engineered, I really only want what M/w does so
perfectly - eyeball the headers, correct the very few it might have got
wrong, annd delete the rest. (ie I've just been getting plagued witth a
new sort of spam from japan that gets through my filters because it
looks legit.
So I just added to the "from" field rules "don't allow .jp" ....bingo.
Admittedly it might mark a bit of legit mail from japan wrong, but I've
never had any yet, and that's what eyeballs are for, no spam prog is
perfect)

However Spamcombat looks very promising, and I would encourage folks to
get it and try it, and provide feedback.

Sorry it's been such a spiel, but I do feel these matters deserve
serious consideration rather than kneejerk "don't like it", and I would
like to hear other views

Wow ! When I suggested that they add that capability in their forums
I got a far from encouraging response. Sure glad that they have
re-considered things.

Many thanks for your info above. :-)

Actually if by learning you mean bayesian filtering, I suspect, that is
what is closing it down compared to MW since bayesian filtering
generally works on the whole email, not just headers?

Yes, it seems to be faster now; _and_ I've found "select all", it's a
right click menu.

I'm getting to like it more, it might replace M/w, but tonight it crashed
and burned my computer when I tried to open Xnews while I was waiting for
it to import 106 messages, :-( I'll bet they were all spam.
