hi

Getting fed up with the length of time acrobat's own .pdf reader takes to
load, particularly as it seems to slow everything else down as it does so
(does it really need to load all those plug-ins just to open a pdf file?)

Anyone know of a free alternative pdf reader that's not quite so bloated?

There isn't a real alternative, but:

You can download an older version of the acrobat reader from the Adobe
website.
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/alternate.html

You can isntall adobe speed-up (It basically removes a bunch of default
plug-ins you seldom need)
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/adobespeedup.html

There is http://www.jawspdf.com/pdf_editor/ but it is infact a crippled PDF
Editor (meaning you get a lot aof menu's and buttuns that actualy do
notheing. Ans it is only sleigly faster as Adboe Acrobat reader

All other pdf readers out there are (AFAIK) powered by either the adobe
engine (so you willl nog gain any speed) or ghostscript. I personally don't
like ghost script, but it just might work for you. then I'd recoomand xPDF
http://www.foolabs.com/xpdf/

Wondering why...

Ghostscript + GhostView as a graphical front-end does actually a pretty
decent job for PDF viewing. The only disadvantage is that it won't be
anti-aliased as pretty as in Acrobat Reader.

Mostly becaus of a bad experience with a previous version.
Stupid, I know, but it is kind of hard to break from this trauma.
The installation went wrong, resulting in a compleet reinstall of my system.

that's why...

Hi MK

Thanks for the suggestions - I'll try an older version & the speedup
program.

Cheers
