I just searched Google and only find latest FA as a large install.

Is there a link to an earler, smaller FA that is no-setup?

FA is now bundled with Agent which explains the large file size. This
is perhaps your best bet since you get a 30 day trial of Agent before
the prog reverts to FA. Don't worry about 'install' since Agent/FA is
about the cleanest install imaginable and is not going to put files
all over your puter. Agent/FA uses a single folder and makes a single
reg entry. you can install it as many times as you wish in as many
places and run all these instances seperately. As i said: a clean
install.

Sure. Of the two, go for 1.21, since IIRC it was the last standalone
release that was Y2K compliant.
If the link for 1.21 wraps, it is the fault of your newsreader, not
mine :-)

1.11:

1.21:

http://www.soft-ware.net/internet/n...ng=en-us&alt=false&sw=800&sh=600&br=IE&vers=6

Be aware that FA (neither the two standalone builds below, nor the
latest bundled release) does not support yEnc)
If you are looking for a freeware newsreader that is yEnc compliant,
you need to be looking at XNews or Dialog.

This is optional, you can choose to use only the free version right
from the start (first time you run it after install), or you can opt
for the 30 day trial first.

One thing I noticed with FA, after just having installed it for a
friend (not using FA my self, but Agent) is that when you click/select
options that are only found in the full version - FA respond with a
NAG dialog/reminder about this feature only available in full version
- do you want to purchase it - or continue using the free
version...(or something like that). Simple example, clicking the
Subject column header to sort by subject (not available in free
version). Very annoying. FA would not have received my vote had I
noticed this behavior earlier.

All the best,
Bjorn Simonsen

Thanks, Terry. The link seems to be in German (?) so I used the other
one from John. My old Netscape does fine on long Url's.

BTW, I looked up some saved info, and PowerGrab also handles binaries,
and is an executable. Jason liked it. I'll look at it. yEnc32 installs.
Where I can, I prefer executables. And of course, Xnews is another
possibility, although there I remember playing with the ini file.

Look into yProxy from www.brawnylads.com - much better way to handle
yEnc than yEnc32. yProxy translates yEnc on the fly so FA never sees
yEnc only UUE. Works flawlessly on my Win98, trivial to setup.

Power Grab is superb. It has a few features that still niggle me after
long acquaintance but it remains my preferred binary client over all
others.

I'm thrashing an Fprot issue, then will get Power Grab working. It sees
the binaries newsgroups, but I have to get it to scan a ng and browse to
a selected binary.

Hi Mike,
Thanks, John. IIRC, in the past, you were a fan of Free Agent?

I still am a fan. Guess you might have visited ;

http://clients.net2000.com.au/~johnf/fagent eh ? :-)

It didn't take me long to work out however that Agent was even better,
and worth the paltry sum being asked for it. One of the few payware
internet programs I now have.

It doesn't even need that registry entry. I think that is just to
allow it to be default news client. I installed it at home and then
copied the install folder to a USB Jump drive. Agent is currently
running from the removable drive and has never been installed on this
computer at all.

Feed me tea and oranges that come all the way from China, and we could
discuss this further.

Yes... I know, you've never heard that before :-)

I didn't get a chance to look at it again, but this is what I expect to
be able to do:
Browse to a newsgroup, browse the postings, select a binary, and
download it. Like in any newareader, except this can d/l binaries.

Thanks, John.

I just wish it was nosetup, then I would try it now.
Being an install, I will evaluate my needs more before I run it. Still,
my old Netscape 4.79 newsreader works fine.
