Consumer put me in my place by writing
A while back, I acquired a 10 GB Western Digital harddrive. It
appeared to be functioning very well, but I tried it today and the
BIOS doesn't even identify it! Sometimes I see the light turn on and
I've tried booting ten times (warm and cold). I tried reseating the
plugs for the power/IDE cables. I went into the BIOS settings and it
has no way of detecting it. Why would the drive die so soon? It hasn't
been used nearly as much as other computers. I have drives from 1995
and even from an XT that still work...

I don't believe you can really guage how long a drive will last. They are
said to last "x" hours between failures, but this is only a guideline under
ideal conditions. It sounds as though it is a pretty good chance that the
drive just croaked.

Are you sure you master/slave jumpers are set correctly?
Did you verify that the IDE ports are set up correctly in the BIOS for the
type of drive.

Does the drive show in Device Manager?

Or is the drive a SCSI drive?

Does consumer's statement "I tried reseating the plugs for the power/IDE
cables."
give you a clue if it's scsi hard drive or eide?
